Patricia "Patsy"
du Pont
Patricia du Pont, founder of the Fair Hill Pony Club, died peacefully at her Elkton (Fairview), Maryland, home on Tuesday, February 19, 2013. She was 94.
Miss du Pont was the youngest of four daughters of the late Archibald and Elizabeth Heyward du Pont. In addition, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Ann Valk, Carolyn Gibbons, and Marie (Levering) Scarlett.
An accomplished horsewoman, show rider, and avid foxhunter, Miss du Pont enjoyed foxhunting with the Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club, and later established and hunted her own pack of foxhounds.
In 1954 she founded one of the first US Pony Clubs. Unique to the Fair Hill Pony Club was that Miss du Pont supplied the horses and her farm for lessons. Generations of Cecil County, Maryland, children who did not own a horse were given the opportunity to learn to ride and care for a horse.
Miss du Pont never married. She loved her dogs and her horses, taking in many dogs and horses whose owners could no longer care for them. Through a private foundation, Miss du Pont made provisions allowing these dogs and horses to live out their natural lives in retirement at her farm.
At the request of Miss du Pont, there will be no memorial service.
Those wishing to make a remembrance donation may contribute to their local animal welfare organization, or to the Fair Hill Nature Center, 630 Tawes Drive, Elkton, MD 21921.

Patsy was my second Riding instructor and our team won national title in Gymkana one year . At horse camp she had Billy Sabine come in as our drill instructor . We often hunted with Ross Taylor or fair hill . Patsy and bassets has a permanent place in my heart!

I will never be able to think of my old home in Fair Hill and not think of Patsy. She was Fair Hill. She lived a long and full life that she shared with many. A kind and loving women. I found one of her young dogs while riding in Fair Hill carried him home on my horse and took him to my vet, Debbie Roberts at Nonantum. I called Patsy to let her know where her young dog was. She was so gracious and thankful. That's just what we do if we care about our animals. Patsy would have done the same thing.

Patsy was one of the most "real" people I've ever known! She opened her home & stables to all! Her animals were her family & she treated them better than her human friends & family! I learned more from her than any book or school could teach! What fun we had fox hunting, pony clubbing & just riding or mucking the stalls!
May she be at peace in heaven with her old Henry Hoople & all her other well loved & cared for animal family!

She was a very nice lady and very dedicated and memorable. Although I haven't seen her in many years, I thought of her again the day she passed. May she rest in peace.

She will be greatly missed. Our children enjoyed the summers at the Pony Club and we enjoyed the knowledge she gave them.

I can remember asking Patsy if she would teach me how to ride a horse. Her response to me was "I only teach children, but if you come over tomorrow, I have two arthritic horses that need to be exercised". I was 42 then and I continued to ride and fox hunt with Patsy for the next 40 years. (I am now 96.)

Will always cherish my memories of riding with Miss Patsy's hunt. She was always so kind when I would call to ask if I could join them for the day. She will be sadly missed. My condolences to her family.

I did not have the pleasure to have known this wonderful lady. I wish I did. She sounds like someone that had a heart of gold. A true friend and mentor. May God bless her family at this time in their lives.

a women to be admired. Always kind and always fair. Her only hard rule..do not hurt one of her hounds if you hunted with her...that was the kiss of death. She gave so much of herself to all and it was a pure privledge to have known her.

I am truly sorry for your lost. I know what's given me comfort is to know one day we will be able to see our deceased loved ones again here on earth.
Thank you for your consideration and once again truly am sorry for your lost

Miss duPont was part of some of my fondest childhood memories giving me opportunities to enjoy Pony Club and Fox Hunting. She understood my love for animals in a way others could not and taught me things I am forever grateful for. I am very sad to hear of her passing. She will always have a special place in my heart.

Hi Patsy; WONDERFUL LADY. She and Tucker Mackie were close friends and lived within a couple of miles from each other, and dated each other. I knew her through Tucker and researching his properties with him, in particular, The Bee Hive, which sits seven miles, from Newark, Delaware, on Route #273.

A heart of gold has stopped beating but now she has gone on too her eternal reward with God....anyone who loves animals, who can only return love to you and ask nothing in return, can really show true love
