Dear Bowllan Family; May God bless all of you; what a grace to remember with fondness your dad ; John welcomed our Bodden family with love & caring & shared his wisdom whenever we had the good fortune to gather for our Family reunions in ADK! I'll always remember The special celebration on my coming home /out of the Poor Clare monastery ; John & his family hosted for me ; in 2008; we all gathered at his home in Rochester; the day was beyond wonderful!
To Mark & Amy ( Bodden) Bowllan; our grands ; John Anthony ; Christina & the entire Bowllan family; please know I'm remembering you in my prayers ; I'm so saddened by our loss; but grateful we have one another!
May John Rest in Peace!
Love & God bless all of you!

John (or Mister Bowllan as we knew him in the neighborhood) was a guy who could force the focus. I remember Paul quoting his father, "Don't go into art, it's a rat race". But then Mark and Paul, both following and rebelling their Dad, followed their interests in photography & video and thrived. I remember seeing Mr. Bowllan come flying out of the Private road in the VW with Dan and Paul outside riding the running boards, delivering the Sunday D&C, and thinking; Mr. Bowllan seems to enjoy delivering the paper more than Dan and Paul do - (maybe flashing on his Air Force years?) I remember at Paul's Bachelor Party (where John took part to the fullest extent allowed by law and Catholic propriety) telling Mr. Bowllan I was studying Physics, he immediately retorted, "Applied, I hope your applying it, it needs to be applied, otherwise its of no value". After 30 years working in medicine and mining, I guess I listened. Another time, just 8 years ago, my brother and I were walking in the old neighborhood and stopped to talk with Mr. Bowllan. His talk turned from praising Dan and Paul for doing all his yard work, to talk of "The Cabin". To me it was revelatory when he said something like 'Yes, just far enough for them to have some independence, and close enough to keep them out of trouble'. I remember thinking - you mean it was all part of some larger parental management plan, rather than (as it seemed at the time - the 60's & 70's) a great place to hell raise unwatched.
He could be an intimidating presence, but he stood for something, and whether you resisted or acknowledged, he shaped the people around him. My condolences to the family. May God Grant Rest In Peace.
