Dear Cousin Leslie & Jeff:
We are so sorry about the tragic loss of Cousin Derek. And we are sad for the world that will not benefit from his brillance. We hope that family and friends will help you deal with this terrible tragidy. We send our love to you both.

David, Brad and I are so shocked and saddened over your loss. Brad remembers befriending Derek at DKJA and sharing many good times with him. We can vividly recall when the boys went out trick or treating here in Island Lakes dressed up as The Men in Black. They were adorable! Still have a great photo of them together on display in the house. David remembers the first time he engaged Derek in a conversation about computers and he couldn't get over the depth of his knowledge. Derek and I enjoyed talking about and playing with our pet birds. Although the boys lost touch, our fondness for Derek remained. He was a remarkable young man. We are so very truly sorry for your loss.

Dear Jeff and Leslie,
Although we have never met, I was a proud friend - and fan - of Derek's. Derek, one of my few Jewish fraternity brothers, was an inspiration to our Fraternity and a "mitzvah" to all whose lives he touched. Derek frequently came by my house, mostly amusingly unannounced, just to say "hi" to Anthony and me or to assist with my video and computer systems. Even my neighbors, who had only met Derek on a few - but meaningful - occasions, told me to "pass along" their condolences as well, as we all had been entertained and inspired by Derek's great sense of humor and tremendous sense of presence at our small-block-party BBQs. In retrospect, it was just a year ago that Derek "rode shotgun" with me to Orlando for HHR and we had discussed going again this season with mutual friends. Words alone cannot express how much he'll be missed and what an inspiration he was to his fraternity brothers and me.

Dear Parents, My heart breaks for you. I lost my only child a year ago and will never have another child, or grandchildren. I wish I had been able to find someone like myself to talk to in the early stages of grief. If I can help you give me a call.
