Tony was a very formative figure in my young life. I visited his home with my family, hunted with my father on Tony ' s Port Hudson property and camped there with friends. In those years I saw him as a strong yet gentle man full of honor, making the world a better place through his ability and unswerving good will toward others. Later I was privileged to know him as an adult friend and coworker, a gift that strongly reinforced my understanding of him. I respected the intellectual and spiritual integrity of his conversion. Through him I learned a great deal about the LDS and was led to examine and strengthen my own spirituality. Many years later I became a military historian and learned some of what he endured as a soldier. This knowledge overlaid my memories of his words and actions giving them more effect on my own life as I interpreted Tony with greater depth. All these years I have held him among those men whose memories I summon for guidance especially in times of decision and crisis. To have known him is a blessing received in early life that continues to give beauty and meaning through events undreamt of when the blessing was granted. Thank you with all my heart that Tony McVea was, and remains, in my life.

Dear McVea family, It was always a joy to come home teaching to your family home. Your dad and mom were so welcoming and your home was filled with the spirit of the gospel. I know they are preparing a Celestial home for all of you. May the gospel comfort and guide you to this home.
