George Tripp Obituary

1926 ~ 2014
George F. Tripp, a man devoted to his family and faith, passed away at his home on February 27, 2014 in Lehi, Utah. His death came after a valiant 10 year battle with myeloid leukemia. The disease ravaged his body but never conquered his spirit The manner in which he lived with his illness - with dignity and good nature, constantly seeking ways to serve and be active to the end - is an inspiration to his family and friends. George, the son of George Washington and Inez Wilkins Tripp, was born August 23, 1926, in Hinckley, Utah. He was the sixth of 13 children reared on the family ranch in Callao, Utah. As the Callao school taught only the elementary grades, George spent his high school years in Delta and Lehi. George was a World War II Veteran, serving in the US Merchant Marines. After his service, he returned to Lehi to work. He married his sweetheart, Shirley Peterson, in the Salt Lake Temple on August 25, 1948. Shirley was his greatest support throughout his long and productive life.
They are the parents of six children: Georgia Jean (Ed) Flinn, Clay Gordon (Judy) Tripp, Nanette (Bob) Kirkpatrick, Ranae (Kyle) Bateman, Tracie (Randy) Bateman, and Stacie (Paul) Bishop, 26 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
George worked for the US Post Office, retiring after 30 years. He then worked for the Alpine School District and retired again after 11 years. George became politically active after retiring from the Post Office, serving in many civic positions including Lehi's Mayor from 1983-1990. Member of the Board of Directors of the Timpanogos Speical Service District, the Utah County Council of Governments, the Mountainland Council of Governments, and the Utah Association of Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS). He was active in the Lehi City Civic Improvement Association (CIA) from 1949-2003, serving as President from 1990-2003. George was a builder, building his own home and eight others for family members. He served as Agent Bishop during the construction of the Lehi 1st Ward Building. He and Carl (Blackie) Harris were the driving forces in restoring Lehi's Memorial Building, which now houses the John Hutchings Museum of Natural History, the Veteran of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion Post 19. He loved carpentry work and maintained a meticulous garden where weeds were never found.
George was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings, including Patriarch, Temple Worker, High Counselor, Bishop, Stake Missionary, Scout leader and teacher. Valiant in his testimony of Christ, he leaves a legacy of faith that is cherished by his posterity. His life of love and service inspired all who knew him. He was a gentleman in the true sense of the word, treating everyone with great kindness and respect. His family and friends will miss his caring love, warmth and sense of humor.
George is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, parents, three sisters (Phyllis, Maxine and Carol), two brothers (Mark and Russell), and son-in-law Ed Flinn. Surviving siblings include Blaine Tripp, Beverlee Peterson, Virginia Downs, Boyd Tripp, Doyle Tripp, Deon Walker and Eudeene Parker.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7, 2014 at 12:00 Noon in the Lehi 1st Ward Chapel, 220 West 200 South. Family and friends may call Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Wing Mortuary, 118 East Main, Lehi, Utah and from 10:00-11:30 a.m. on Friday morning at the church. Interment, Lehi City Cemetery. I remember brother Tripps warm smile and friendly hand shake. I really thought a lot of Bisop Tripp. He was a good man.
