RONALD ASTIN Obituary

Ronald Taylor Astin 1947 ~ 2010 Ronald Taylor Astin, age 63, quietly passed away on July 24, 2010. Ron was born in Salt Lake City July19, 1947, to John LaVar and Betty Taylor Astin. He married his sweetheart, Adele McCoy, on April1, 1971, in Salt Lake City. Ron studied history, English and political science at the University of Utah and received his BS degree in History in 1970 and his MA degree in History in 1972. He was the recipient of the Fishbein Scholarship for the Study of History and Medicine at the University of Chicago, and he also studied Modern Europe and Tudor/Stuart England. In 1977 he was awarded his J.D. degree from the University of Chicago. Ron began his practice of law in San Francisco and then he and Adele moved to Houston to join Vinson & Elkins, where he eventually became a partner. He was a very successful corporate attorney at Vinson & Elkins in both their Washington, D. C. and Houston offices until his retirement several years ago. He also taught classes at the South Texas School of Law in Houston. Ron was an avid reader and had a great love of history; he loved books and collected an impressive library over the years. He had a particular love for nautical history, and he loved and collected model ships. Ron could hold anyone spellbound with his extensive knowledge, and he was an expert on the life and history of his great-great-grandfather President John Taylor. Ron is survived by his sisters, Sharon Astin, Johnny (Jeff) Pugh, and Laurie (Craig) Goodrich, his brother, Marc (Cathy) Astin and in-laws Michael (Liz) McCoy and Anita (Thomas) Manka, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Adele, his parents, and his dear mother-in-law, Eueda McCoy. A private graveside service for the families will be held at a later date.

I loved my Uncle Ron so very much. I have so many dear memories of him and Adele. I will never forget when he had to take me to the latest movie out "Star Wars" and we stood in line forever. He was such a neat person and could do so many impersonations in any dialect. My favorite was "the Swedish Chef" from "The Muppet Show". I will miss him forever. Love you always, Ron. Rest in peace with Adele & Seti.

I've known Ron 63 years, but only seen him a few times in the last forty. Ron and Adele had two lives well lived. We miss contributions as well to Utah history.

Last saw Ron in 1972 when we had dinner at Alta. He was my debate partner for two years during high school and we played trombone together in the high school orchestra. I had so hoped to see him again after all these years. I feel lost.

Requiem im pace, my dear old friend. We met 50 years ago and what great times since: joy, challenges, hilarity, understanding, separation, love, dustups, transformation. Condolences to all: the Astins and McCoys, Ron's old and new friends, especially Sam, Marshall, Kyle, Matt, Gavin.

I only knew Ron for a short time having designed and oversaw the construction of the lower level of his home here in the Salt Lake Valley. We worked together to create a wonderful space for his beloved books and model ships. I enjoyed my time with Ron and Seti, his Westie, during this process. I learned so much from him and will miss him. The last time I saw him was to celebrate my marriage to Bob at our new home. Our hearts go out to the family in your loss of such a wonderful man. Ron and Adele were wonderful people and were friends much loved by Maryanne and me. I shall keenly feel the loss Ron's unique insight into and understanding of human nature. His friendship was one of the most important of my life and it is hard to believe I shall talk with him no more. I shall miss him a lot.

Ron was like a father to me. He let me into his home when I had nowhere else to go. I will never forget the times I would go ask him a question and I would sit there for a good 2 hours listening to him speak about his past. Ron made a huge impact on my life and will continue to do so. He movitated so many people to be better human beings and he truly cared for the well-being of the less fortunate. Ron was an amazing spirit and I know he's watching over all of those he cared about and those who loved him.

Ron was especially helpful when his uncle, Ralph Taylor, passed away some time ago. He was brilliant and caring and helped my wife, his cousin, Cindy Taylor Nachtigall.
He comes from a wonderful family, his mother and father were full of life and enjoyed it and each of his siblings reflects their parent's life's view.
