Bruce Miller Obituary

Bruce L. Miller

West Des Moines

Bruce L. Miller, 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston with his son and daughter by his side. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.

Bruce was born December 19, 1918, on the family farm in Tama County, Iowa to James and Sadie Miller. He grew up working on the farm with his three brothers. Bruce graduated from Reinbeck High School and from the University of Iowa.

Bruce married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Joyce Biebesheimer, on June 1, 1941. The couple first lived in Kansas City, Missouri before settling in Des Moines in 1946. In that year, he joined Allied Mutual Insurance Company beginning a career of 45 years with the Allied Insurance Companies. He retired at the end of 1991 shortly after his 73rd birthday.

Bruce was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan rarely missing a Hawkeye football or basketball game. He used to like to talk about his days as a student at Iowa watching Nile Kinnick and the Ironmen play football. He also enjoyed talking about his days growing up on the farm. After his retirement, some of his favorite times were those he spent with family and his special circle of friends having coffee or eating out.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara and son, Mark both of West Des Moines; cousin, Bev Butler of Spirit Lake; and nephews and nieces, Bill Miller of rural Reinbeck, IA, Mary Diers of Naples, FL, Dean (Judy) Lauterbach of Newton, IA, Jon (Georgia) Lauterbach of Alabama, and Sheila (Dave) Wilson of West Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years in 1985.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the University of Iowa Foundation earmarked to the M. Joyce Miller Memorial Award and Visiting Professorship endowment fund. This endowment was established in 1985 in memory of Bruce's wife and he and the family have continued to support the fund since that time.

Barb & Mark: My folks just told me about your dad. I am so very sorry! Even though he and I were only in touch over the holidays, I always looked forward to receiving his Christmas card. I'm going to miss that. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.
