Dendy married my husband and I at Grace UMC in Des Moines in 1983. We had followed him there from Iowa City, where I had first heard him preach when I attended a Sunday service with my roommate. I loved his story-telling style of preaching. It touched your heart and captivated your interest. It was genuine and honest and welcoming. When I met my husband-to-be and he turned out to be a Methodist, I was convinced that I should become one, too. My only dismay was that I thought Dendy would not be able to marry us since I was from Des Moines. Yet to my joy, he was soon after transferred to Grace Church in Des Moines. It was God's blessing upon us that we were able to have Dendy officiate our wedding. I will always think fondly of him and his wife, and cherish the stories he shared with us during our pre-marriage counseling. It is among the best advice I have ever received on how to live a good, Christian life, and to have a happy, harmonious marriage and family. May they both rest in God's peace. We extend our deepest condolences to the family.

I recall working as Church Secretary when Dendy was in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. At the time, I was barely into my 20's, with a young daughter and a husband attending Iowa Wesleyan College. I recall many hours visiting on various topics, as well as attending services as this was my home church for many years as I grew up. Formative years for me - and important years for Dendy's family as well. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. It's good to think of the many things accomplished in Dendy's busy life!

My recollections of Dendy Garrett are those of a child of the 1950s and 1960s who attended and was confirmed at Wesley United Methodist Church in Des Moines, IA, one pastoring stop for Dendy in his long life journey. He and Ellie were about the same ages as my parents; their kids were close in age to my siblings and me. For many years after they left Wesley, I would enjoy catching up with the Garrett family through the annual Christmas letters that my folks received.
When I recall Dendy I picture him as an approachable, fairly tall and slender man with a calm voice. Reading his obituary now enlightens me for it updates and details the numerous ways he faithfully served God and people for many years following his departure from our congregation. Currently I work as a teacher associate in an elementary school, so Dendy's service-filled life story prompted me to think of the Dr. Seuss book title, “Oh! The Places You'll Go!”, which I'd extend in reference to Dendy with the following: “…and The Lives That You'll Touch!”
I feel fortunate that many years ago my path crossed with Dendy Garrett's, allowing me to walk with him a little while, and I offer my sympathies to his family as they grieve his loss and celebrate his life.

Dendy's family is in our thoughts and prayers. May you take comfort in knowing we are remembering him and honoring his memory at Iowa Wesleyan College. On a personal note, Dendy was serving the Mount Pleasant Church when I attended Iowa Wesleyan College in the late 60s. Wonderful man. Ministered prayerfully wherever he went.
