Bob was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and friend to so many.
Bob passed away way too soon in life.
Bob was a very generous man. I met Bob over 20 years ago as I was sitting in my pajamas at Bob & Becky's kitchen table having coffee; Bob's comment was “you must be Peggy”. Ever since that day Bob welcomed me into their home with open arms. He had a spare key to the house made for me and years later when Bob changed the locks on the door he again had a key made for me. Their home was like a second home to me.
Bob was a funny man with a very dry sense of humor. He would always tease me that when I was coming to Des Moines I always brought the bad weather with me. He would also give me a hard time about throwing things in their garbage that were recyclable. And the big joke was that his second wife was in town. And every night before he went to bed he would ask Becky and I the same question –“Becky what time do you want your coffee in the morning and Peggy what time do you want your pepsi in the morning, and he knew our same answer every time would be “when we wake up”
Bob, I am so sorry I couldn't be there yesterday to say good-bye to you, but I promise you I will be there to help Becky make it through the difficult times ahead when she needs me. Becky is a very strong person, but the shattering of her broken heart will be the loudest quiet she will ever hear.
What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more laugh, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.
I will miss you dearly Bob.
Dear Becky, I know we spoke yesterday but I wanted to look at the pics again today and contribute this one of our recent visit. Lots of love to you and Becky Kay and the rest of your family and friends.

There are no words to express the loss of a friend; yet, a friend who left us with great memories of special days filled with laughter, jokes, adventures and even tears. We are lucky that Bob Gruening opened the door to his heart and let us in.
Bob will remain with us forever, and will continue to be remembered through our love and friendship with Becky. We thank Becky for sharing Bob, their friends and family with us. They made us a part of their lives and honored us with their trust and love.
Bob can be sure his ears will be burning with all the laughter, memories and continued adventures we will share with Becky, family and friends. He will definitely be shaking his head at us, and we will definitely continue loving Bob!
