I worked as Jim's secretary in the mid 70s while he was serving as supervisor of services to the deaf and hard of hearing. I knew him then as an exceptionally kind, thoughtful, and generous man. Now, with some years behind me, I know how rare and treasured those simple virtues are. Jim was a mensch. I hope that knowing how highly we who knew him regarded him brings some comfort to his family now.

My deepest sympathies go to your family.
Jim's contribution to the Iowa American Sign Language Interpreting profession was both historic & significant in promoting the advancement of deaf people in all aspects of their lives, not simply in the vocational area. He was a highly respected professional locally, statewide and nationally who advocated for the establishment of interpreter training programs, valued as an advisor to both public & private programs serving deaf people and promoted the certification of interpreters. As a fellow CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) I felt a special kinship with him considering him as a wise sage & trusted advisor. His legacies will live on and for that we can all be most thankful.

Jim was a kind and wonderful inspiration for me as a person with a hearing loss. He was a shing example of advocacy and making things happen. The community was greatly blessed by his presence and contributions! Salute to Jim.
