I think... Derek Main's presence on Earth... And with his means of sharing knowledge and awareness with so much enthusiasm and purpose... More so than effectively 98% of EVERYONE I have known in 50 years of life (on Earth)... I reason that given any "Hero" in history, that one would want to talk with... Be it a religious hero, inspirational hero, Ghandhi, John Wayne or The Guy Who Cures Cancer... It's a long shot to not think any one of them is sitting in a circle in the dirt listening to Derek.

If one believes in the "Larger Picture Concept," there is nothing that supports that idea more than to see a Great Man, in Earthly standards, be memorialized in such the way that he has... while thinking about the ending of "2001: A Space Odyssey," and to a lesser extent, V'Ger. (if one has listened to his lecture... Those references are clear.)

Live Long Derek! Rust Never Sleeps!

Derek's passing was grieved deeply, and his life was remembered fondly tonight at the Dallas Paleo Society meeting. Prayers that Derek's family can treasure the memories of his scientific and people passions. Derek was one in a million.

My deepest sympathy to those dear to you. You facilitated learning for so many. I understood much more from your explanations than I had ever learned from books. Thank you for those field experiences!

Derek was a bright, enthusiastic young man with great positive energy. He was well liked by everyone who knew him at the Dallas Musuem of Natural History, the Dallas Paleo Society and throughout the Geology/Paleontology circles locally. I always enjoyed seeing him when our paths crossed and catching up. He will be greatly missed.
