Thank you for your love and support through the years. God bless you Uncle Ben and I hope you and mom and uncle Bill are resting in peace.
Sincerely,

I always called him Floyd; never knew why it wasn't, 'Ben", for me. But, over the years (many years) we drifted apart, especially in the 10 years since my wife and I moved to Valparaiso, Indiana, in 2004. Before that, we would talk occasionally and even visit. I recall him and his family coming by for an East Texas visit sometime in the late 1970's. They were on a sort of, 'rediscovering family roots' trip and had gone by Locust Grove Cemetery, outside Gladewater, Texas to visit the graves of Ben's grandparents (Shepperds) and other family. They came to Henderson to visit me and my family who lived there. We would kid that we were each other's only '1st cousins', our mothers being, in fact, sisters. I tried to interest him in organizing a "Shepperd family reunion", but we never got that off the ground.
I just today found out that Ben had passed away last Spring, when Johnnie returned a call I made a day or two ago. I'd called Tim's number by mistake. We visited a while and wished each other well, but I truly regret not having kept more in touch over the past many years.
So, I say now, "Good Bye" to my only 1st Cousin, and a fine gentleman he was... May we meet again some day in Heaven.
Also, my condolences go out to Johnnie, who must go on, facing life alone. May God give you courage, even times of joy, as you acknowledge Him daily. Finally, I thank Him that you have two loving sons close by.

I first met Ben in the mid-50s when we were both in the Jaycees.

He become very successful and rose to become president of Summit National Bank.Success didn't go to his head, though. Every time I ran into him, he was the same old Ben. Friendly, upbeat, positive!

Truly one of the finest gentlemen I've ever known!

Ben had been a friend of ours for the last 10 years and after we ate our lunch, of what we nicked named the "The Ben Special" as he was leaving he would always say"Drop me a line when you find work." He will be surely be missed. Our prayers and thoughts are with you, Johnnie.
