my condolences to your family Mr Payne you are the BBQ King! And you leave a legacy you will be missed.
I am saddened by your loss. We became "food friends" when we lived in Candleridge. He was a very humble and very nice man, surely to be missed.
So sorry for the family and friends loss. We are big fans of Cousin's, not just for the excellent food, but the friendly atmosphere. Thank you, Mr. Payne for a great business. When our location moved from 1709 to Heritage, we were sad. However, the new location is bigger and has indoor eating. We've never been treated like money, but rather like friends. Rest well and peaceful.
So sorry to hear of your loss..Your Dad was such a kind man .Prayers to the whole family.Nancy Dewitt Morrow and chilren
My prayers are with the family. Mr. Payne was a wonderful man and my family love eating at Cousin's because of the wonderful family atmosphere.
I always thought of Bootsie as Zayne Ann Payne's little brother. I rembember the day that Zayne Ann came to school and told us that there was a new baby at her house. Zayne Ann was a dear friend and her entire family was (and is) so wholesome and hospitable. She and Bootsie are certainly missed.
OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL.
CLIFF SORRY TO HEAR OF ABOUT CALVIN.
A CUSTOMER FOR MANY YEARS.
What a trip down memory lane for me reading all of these comments. I remember Boots and his family when they had a place in Lubbock in the late 1970s called Captain's Galley--great fried catfish!! A buddy and I would eat there 3 or 4 times a week. And when going through the line, visiting with Boots and his family would always make you feel very welcome and right at home. Restaurant owners could learn a lot from these guys.
I just found out about this today. Best wishes to Mark and Jordan and the rest of the Paynes. Boots was a star and made eating at Cousin's a unique experience.
Bootsie & Beverly were regular customers at zekes,, we were always glad to see them.We loved to talk about the restaurant business & other things. We were so shocked when we heard he had passed.Bootsie will be missed so much, we think of him all the time.
So sorry to hear this news! Our favorite Barbeque place since they opened on McCart. Will never forget his smiling face. RIP Bootsie.
My father Coach Bill Allen loved Bootsy and going to Cousins We always go to the one on mccart when we are in town. We admired Bootsy and the whole famoly
So sorry for your loss. We have been eating "Cousins since we moved to Fort Worth in 1971. Take care. The Eddie Fulps Family.
OMG I just found out today about Boots and I am devastated. My family has been eating at the McCart store since it opened. I am going to miss his infectious smile. You could be having the worse day and see Boots and everything was OK. I am going to miss him a lot.
My first job was as a bus-boy at Cousin's. Boots treated everyone like family! I am grateful that I had the opportunity to know him and the Payne family. I learned that being a leader comes from being a servant! Prayers sent for the Payne family!
We loved Mr. Payne and his whole family. My parents ate at the McCart restaurant several times a week! The whole Payne family made our family feel like a part of theirs. I'll always remember Mr. Payne with a smile on his face and a positive attitude, even in the midst of illness and loss. From Priscilla Wilkendorf Nix
Our family has been eating at Cousins since you opened on McCart. So sorry to hear that Boots has passed. Our sympathies and prayers are with your family
Cousins is a fantastic place to eat, but the atmosphere of family permeates the place. Seems like just yesterday Mr. Payne was manning the register, and what a friendly and nice guy. He was always smiling and loved and appreciated every person that came through the door. More importantly, his kids have the same traits, and it is fun to come to Cousins for the food, but to also chat with the boys, and for us, has been mostly Cliff and especially Craig. However, the entire staff treats us like guests. Mr. Payne may be gone, but not forgotten. His smile would always light up the day.
Our sympathy to the entire Payne family. We ate your Bar-B-Que for years when we lived it Ft. Worth, and try to go every time we visit. We shipped your sauce to friends from Oregon to Minnesota, and when our son was married in Florida, he wanted Cousins for his rehersal dinner - yes, we shipped it. Such a pleasant and friendly and family oriented man. June & Malcolm Hill, Tallahassee, FL
I am very very sorry for the loss of Mr. PayneIII. My wife Donna and I raised the kids on your Bar B-Q. He will be greatly missed.
Bootsie was a great man and an excellent example of what everyone should be a little more like each day. My prayers are with the entire Payne family.
"What do you say, young'un." That was Boots' unfailing welcome anytime I came in the store. Always offered along with an extra big smile. What a marvelous Texas gentleman and a marvelous Texas family! Mrs. Payne, Cliff, Corby, Jeff, Mark and Craig, we rejoice with you in remembering Boots' life and we embrace you in prayer, sad at his passing. God bless you all for the impact you have had on so many lives and for the lessons you have taught us about the importance of family.
Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

It has been a long time since I last saw Bootsie. Perhaps 15 years. I remember that he always had a welcoming smile for everyone. I am sorry for your loss. Rest in peace. God bless.
May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.
Terry and I extend sincerest sympathy to the Payne family. Each visit to Cousins was an opportunity to enjoy a great meal and visit with family friends and we always felt a little better after Bootie asked, "How you doin' young'un?"
I was so surprised and saddened to hear of Calvin's passing. I can't add to what's already been written, but we have lost a great example of what a business proprietor should be. And his sons and daughter are testimony of what a fine example of a dad he was. The apples didn't fall very far from the tree. May the God of all comfort sustain you through this time of loss, Beverly, Jeff, Cliff and the rest of the family.
Larry (and Charlene) Willcoxon
Cousin's is like eating at home with family. Every person that works there always smiles and greets you every time you come in and the reason for such kindness is because of a family man by the name of "Bootsie". May God bless you & family always and comfort you. Calvin will always be there with you and especially at Cousin's.
In 1985 our son Brian was very sick. Sometimes beginning to believe he may never be returning home. Miraculously he made a recovery after months in the hospital and months at home. Our Neighbors and Calvin's son, Cliff & Regina Payne lived across from us and knew what we had been through. Cliff mentioned to Calvin (Bootsie) about having a benefit for Brian and to assist on our medical bills. On Mother's Day 1985 Cousins would have been closed but Cousins Family opened location on McCart on their own time, using all volunteers taking in money and buying TV for Brains Bedroom where he spent most of summer. This is what Calvin Payne, Payne Family and Cousins BBQ Family are about, a gift that Bootsie & Beverly instilled in the Family and all their lifes they touched. My family will always be grateful to the Payne Family and their leader Calvin (Bootie) Payne. Your legacy will live on Bootie.
Sympathy and our Love to Family from David, Cindy, Brain & Tami Brooks and Tim & Leslie Brooks and our four little men, our grandsons.
My heart is saddened by your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you.
May GOD bless the Payne Family. Mr. Payne was a great guy always smiling and joking
To Beverly and entire Payne family. We were neighbors for over 20 years and the entire family are such gracious people. May his legacy live on forever. God bless you all. Jeff and Beverly Wilson
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of such a gracious and loving person, he will be missed. To the Payne family, "may God bless you and keep you."
Our deepest sympathies in the passing of Mr. Payne. We first met him when we went to Cousin's on McCart with Mother and Daddy, Marilyn & Dink Davidenko. After that Mr. and Mrs. Payne always asked about them. Mom and Zayne Ann (Bootsie's sister) were dear friends and Buddy and Daddy were always doing something crazy together. Just sure that Zayne Ann and Buddy were there to greet you again. Her with her beautiful smile and Buddy laughing that big ol' laugh. We will always love the BBQ and memories.
My family has delighted in the fine BBQ offerings of Cousin's BBQ since it opened in 1983. Bootsie Payne was always gracious and never once corrected me when I called him "Mr. Cousins." His family has continued the tradition and helped make the establishment a Fort Worth landmark. Thank you, Sir and God Rest Your Soul! You will be missed, as your legacy lives on.
Phyllis Goodman, Fort Worth

Our crew went there for lunch during construction and met Boots...we went back every day there after until we opened and he was first on our guest list for VIP opening night...if you met Boots, you liked him and his family reflected his values and personality....he was kind to everyone....iwe shall miss seeing him at his corner table having coffee and telling stories.
