I'm returning to Hurst over Thanksgiving after more than 50 years. I called Bell High today to learn if any of my old teachers and coaches might still be with us. They told me Coach had died in September. I had hoped to visit him if he still lived in the area, as he was truly an inspiration to me. Thank you, Coach. You taught me well!
I remember being in the Pennington Field House in 1968, my coach, Hoot and me were talking football. Hoot pointed out the importance of the position I held with one statement and my game was elevated forever. Many other times I saw him around the schools. The world is a lesser place with his passing.
We are the Spears family(formerly of Grand Saline,Texas) Hoot was a good friend to all of us, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!

Our son, Elliot Souter, has been awarded the "Hoot Smith Fighting Heart" Award for two years running as linebacker at LD Bell High School and we are overwhelmed with what this award truly means. We consider it such an honor and privilege at Elliot having been identified as exemplifying qualities and characteristics of such a respected leader and educator. Thank you, Mr. Smith for leaving such a legacy. We pray for comfort and strength for your family and that God will rest your soul.

....my favorite coach by far...Hoot probably did more than any man to build my character other than my father. And I never thanked him...sure wish I had now. Martin Milner
Dear Pat, Mark, Marci and family. We were so sad to hear about Hoot. As David said "one of my all time favorite people". He was truly a good man. We would have been at the service but only found out today that it was today. He touched SO many lives. ...Including ours. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you. May God comfort you. It was my privilege to have worked with this very wonderful man at the H-E-B Administration Bldg for 5 years. We all loved him and knew we were fortunate to have known him. He was truly special. My deepest sympathies to you, Pat and to all your wonderful family.
A man among men who taught "life skills" to his athletes and we didn't even know it. He influenced a lot of us in ways he never knew. Someday, in Heaven, he will know as we all line up to shake his hand and listen to him tell us a Proverb.
Great teacher and coach . Very good man and friend. Truly cared about students.
Hoot was such a great leader and developer of others, including me. We are so fortunate that he choose to make a difference in the field of education, and his life continues to impact others.
There are no amount of words that can express all the influences that Hoot left with all the young people and coaches in HEB. What a legacy of a great Christian man, husband, father, granddad, and coach.
Much love & prayers.

Another great one gone home! Our prayers will be with the family. So many memories rush forward of a man loved and respected by all who had the privilege to call him coach, their teacher, their mentor,or friend. He always left you better for having been in his presence. Thanks you Coach Smith we remember the lessons and hopefully pass the final as we know you are!
Hoot was a quality act. Very honest and loved by all. He will be missed.
I'm keeping the family in my prayers. We have lost a great man who happened to coach football. He used that tool to reach kids every day. Thank God for men like him.
He was a great coach a great man and a great leader. Coach Smith will always be in my thoughts and memories.I am proud to have been one of his "little fellows" Pat our prayers are with you and the family
Hoot, You were my boss, my mentor, my colleague and most of all my friend. You taught me to fight like a gladiator and love like a Christian.
Rest in peace and know you were the best!

Hoot never met a stranger. His calm, peaceful, caring demeanor will be missed. What a leader on so many levels. Thank you, Hoot, for all the memories.

Thank you Coach Smith for devoting your life to the kids that you taught. Even those of us that you taught 50 yrs ago, learned well, from you!
A humble, servant leader that earned the respect of the many lives he touched. I count it as a tremendous blessing to have been a part of the youth development system Hoot created and managed. Athletics was a means, not an end. Thanks Hoot for all you did.
Thanks Hoot for being the GREAT person, that you were to me and my family. You were a dear friend to us all and will be missed very much. Thanks for your leadership and you Christian faith, you and your family are a blessing. I will see you again and I look forward to it. The Lord's blessing to the family, Ray and Diana DeBord
Such a blessing to have known and admired Coach Hoot Smith
Pat and Kids; Coach taught us football and other lessons on a daily basis. The other lessons on doing the right thing and being a man were by far the most important. Coach had such an influence on so many people that a legacy happened. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this sad time. The Byers Family
RIP Hoot. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Roland Rangel
