Remember oh most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, oh Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I fly, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. Oh Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy clemency, hear and answer me.

May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

I knew your daughter from 24Hour Fitness. I was devastated when I read the news. I have been visiting her grave ever since. Every time I walk in the door I think of Jillian.

I will visit again this Sunday(11/25) and for sure on her birthday. You will know I was there if you see a red rose.

"These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full, This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, to lay down his life for another. Jn.15:11-13" Officer Smith will forever be remembered for the selfless act and sacrifice she made for the life of others daily. The love and light of our Lord and Savior truly shined brightly in the life of this young woman. May the blessings of our Almighty Comforter keep you all in this most sorrowful time. Rest assured that God only takes' those that are truly his without spot, wrinkle or blemish. The Words of Comfort from the Lord is: "I will never leave you, nor forsake you. So we may boldly say the Lord is My Helper, and I shall not fear what man shall do unto me. Heb. 13:5,6." "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Jn 14:27"

Your Sister in Christ and in Creation

January 05, 2011
Dear Smith Family,

What a terrible time to lose your beloved daughter, during the holiday season and so quickly after her recent graduation. Although it is of small comfort, you must know that God did not have to ask Jillian what she had done for her fellow man........she gave the highest gift He could ever ask......she gave her own life to save that of a fellow human being. There is no greater sacrifice in God's eyes than someone who gives their life to save another, without consideration for her own safety. While you miss her desperately, know, too, that she did not have a moment to suffer or to fear.........she immediately became the police woman she studied so hard to be, and as quickly as she was shot, God scooped her up in His arms to take her Home. My heart is heavy for your whole family because the hardest time is yet to come. When everyone goes home and gets on with their lives, it will be difficult to carry out the simplest of tasks. Please rely on family members and friends to help ease your pain. Take them up on offers to cook for you, or spend time with you, or invite you to tell them about Jillian---let your grief flow and take as long as you need to grieve. It is an experience unique to each of us who lose a loved one. Do not let anyone push you into getting back into your daily routine too soon, although sometimes it does help to distract your mind from the greatest loss a parent can handle. Jillian's legacy is one of honor and excellence and if you listen closely, you will hear her voice telling you that she is fine and is where she needs to be.

With thoughts and prayers for peace in your hearts one day,

Mary Cleve
(I am a friend of Sharon McCanlies.)

January 05, 2011
Giving her life to save a child is the most honorable thing that Jillian could have ever done. It's people like her who are brave and have my utmost respect. A true Hero in my eyes she will always be. I respect what she's done - she has definately helped me see the reality of what it means when people say to serve and protect. I now have a true understanding. Unfortunately, she is no longer here umongst us but truly she is in a better place right now at a time that is way too soon. To be so young she has touched many people in a good way and has made a permanent mark in each - It's individuals such as Jillian that we need more of in this world (compassionate and dedicated); she definately had more to do on this earth but God has her doing a better job now, she will be truly missed umongst many and her ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten
January 05, 2011
Words cannot express the saddness that we feel for you and your family, but God will sustain us through this difficult time.

I hear the sound of a mighty rushing wind and it's closer now than its ever been
I can almost hear the trumpet as Gabriel sounds the call
At the midnight cry we'll be going home
when Jesus steps out on a cloud and calls God's children the Christ shall rise to meet him in the air and then those that remain will be quickly changed
At the midnight cry (at the midnight cry)
When Jesus comes again

I look around me and the prophecies fulfilling and signs of the times their appearing everywhere
I can almost hear the Father as He says son go get my children
At the midnight cry
The bride of Christ shall rise...

Prayers and thoughts to the Smith Family in this time of need...
Matthew 5:4-" Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted"
January 04, 2011
Smith Family ~ as a mother sometimes word can not express the depth of someone's loss, especially when it is your child, who had so much more to offer. As I listened to today's service on line. As I heard these words "she laid her life down, for another". When I hear over and over how she shielded that child from death... how remarkable that a young life would do so for others. She truly is a child of God, how many can really say that they would do the same.... God has already welcomed her home with these great words, that I pray to hear one day "faithful servant well done" I pray that as Parents you will always know what an Angel she is/was to the Arlington community, Law Enforcement and to me. She has touched my heart and the depth of my soul as a reminder how we should be living our lives, for are brother/sisters. As she watches over you I pray that the child which she protected will live an abundant life that God has promised her. In my thoughts and in my prayers you will always be. Thank you for allowing the live broadcast for the many who could not attend today, we were there in prayer. Blessings Always. YSIC

I do not know your family, but I would like to say I am sorry for your loss, and I am happy to know that Jillian was protecting us in Arlington Texas. She is now protecting us in the presence of our Heavenly Father. God Bless your family and may you have peace and comfort.
January 04, 2011
You inspired us all. Your beautiful smile will never be forgotten. I really appreciate all that you did for us. Your desire to work in a job that protects citizens is a gracious determination and SELFLESS ACT. You were so young but yet very strong. How many of us could have done what you did or inspired to be? I respect every policeman that works in law enforcement. People in the world should salute and thank all policemen today for putting their lives in danger everyday. I hope and pray that from this day forward that any call that is domestic related be classified as a PRIORITY 1 because its never safe, especially at night, because that person is angry and will come back to get even, usually minutes or hours later. It should be called a JILLIAN PRIORITY 1 for all domestic calls.

Being a servant of this profession should warrant a salary of a minimum of $100,000.00 a year. Jillian, your desire to serve knowing that your salary most likely would have been less than half of this amount speaks volume of your selfless attitude. I hope that one day, a policeman gets a salary of at least $100,000 starting salary, because of the danger that they face each day.

God bless your soul.

Cathy

I didn't know this young lady but my heart immediately went out to her family and friends. God knows BEST and he NEVER makes a mistake, God needed his Angel Jillian to come back home and to be in his presence to rest with all of his ANGELS. She was to precious for this world so he saw fit to take her back home. The way in which she went was tragic but now she is resting. I will continue to pray with you all. May Jillian Smith continue to rest in heaven with our lord and savior.

Lord I ask for courage

Courage to face and
Conquer my own fears...

Courage to take me
Where others will not go...

I ask for strength

Strength of body to protect others
And strength of spirit to lead others...

I ask for dedication

Dedication to my job, to do it well
Dedication to my community
To keep it safe...

Give me Lord, concern

For others who trust me
And compassion for those who need me...

And please Lord

Through it all
Be at my side...

I love you all, and may God Bless and keep you safe.

Sonya, Doug and Jessica,
I find words to be terribly inadequate at expressing this deep, deep loss. The sadness is palpable and hurts. I recall Jillian fondly. She is frozen in time for me when she was a toddler. Her mother on occasion would bring the girls in to work with her...Jillian always dressed so cute and I even recall a dress with ruffles. What an adorable child she was (her sister, too) and what a fine young woman she became. She had a calling and followed her heart into the police force. On that fateful day, that no one could have prepared for or could imagine, Jillian was simply doing her her job when she responded to a dispatch call. This call turned out to be nothing routine. Jillian did her job fully and more importantly, she did her job heroically. It takes someone really special to be a hero and that is what is Jillian is to me. Because of her, the life of a child was spared. Rest in peace with our Heavenly Father, sweet Jillian, and know that you will be greatly missed here on earth by all who knew and loved you. Linda Carlson and family

I know domestic calls are among the most dangerous for our police officers, but without them putting their safety on the line many more women would be dying at the hands of their abuser. December 30, 2010
My family & I can't stop thinking about Jillian & the immense grief her family, friends and co-workers are experiencing. You are all in our thoughts & prayers. As a parent of a little girl who wants to grow up to be a police officer & also being the girlfriend of an officer combined with losing family & friends to senseless crimes your loss hits home & my heart breaks for you. Although senseless, tragic & unfair Jillian's death was not in vain as she saved the life of an innocent child caught up in a situation she didn't ask to be in. If nothing else may that little girl remember the strong, heroic woman who didn't think twice about sacrificing everything to protect her & stood up to an abuser so that she herself will grow up & recognize the signs of an abusive relationship & gets out before it's too late. Thank you Officer Smith for your service and your example.

We all remember your smile when you graduated from the Police Academy. Even then, you stood out as an exceptional individual. It was apparent that you represent all that is good in America. As difficult as it is for us to “get along” among our many races, creeds, and ethnicities, you are the product of that effort, and you make the struggle worthwhile. I cry as I recall the adage that the good die young.
December 30, 2010
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the tragic death of Officer Smith. I am very sorry that she is no longer with you.

No doubt this sad event has been very disturbing for you and for the many other people who knew and cared for her. I am thinking of you and them in this time of loss and bereavement.
With sympathy.
December 30, 2010
Your selfless action of shielding that little girl in the face of danger, proves there are good people in times of evil.

As we grieve, we can only thank you for that service before self attitude. I know she will be ever grateful for your sacrifice.

'Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.'

The definition of a hero is “one who shows great courage”. To me a hero is someone who puts others before self. Jillian’s human instinct to protect the helpless is what made her a hero. But she seems the type of person who, if asked, would have said she was just doing her job. To Jillian’s parents-you are remarkable people to have raised such a remarkable child. Thank you for giving her life and for loaning her to the world for the short time she was here. To her friends-you must be great people for her to want you to share in her life. Keep loving others as you did her for that can help make the world a better place. To her colleagues-she chose Arlington because it was home. You have done great things for your City for her to admire you enough to want to grow up and become a part of you. Keep doing the job that you do in honor of Jillian and those like her who want to “serve and protect”. God speed Jillian, God speed.
December 30, 2010
My heart goes out to your family for for their loss and the Arlington Police Department.
December 30, 2010
I retired from Arlington PD in 2004 as an FTO. Sounds like Jillian would have a been a great trainee. To the Smiths- Jillian will always be with APD (which will always be there for YOU too). She will be a great example to other officers, especially the women. I am positive that her love of the profession has and will affect lots of others for years including that 11 year old and her family. Be proud of Jillian that she will always be with with us, and her ideals are an example to other officers in dealing with and helping others.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye. But little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.

Although my family moved from the area in which Jillian attended high school a few years ago, there is something to be said about caring for those in the community that make a difference. She will always be a remembered as a hero.

God Bless the family of Officer Jillian Smith. Words cannot express the sympathy that is extended to your family.

Dear Smith family, our hearts go out to you. Someone shared this thought with me during a time of grief - and it brought me some solace. I wanted to share it with you now in hopes it might do the same for you: "When we are standing at the edge of all the light we have and take the step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is believing that one of two things will happen: either there will be something solid for us to stand on ... or we will learn to fly."
December 30, 2010
