Kenneth Korngable Obituary

Kenneth "Ken" Arthur Korngable entered his heavenly home on Friday, May 10, 2013. Visitation: 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Christ Church Assembly of God (small auditorium), 5301 Alta Mesa Blvd., Fort Worth, celebrating Ken's life with music and a memorial ceremony. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Funeral, visitation and reception will be held Saturday, May 18, at St. Joseph's Church in West St. Paul, Minn. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to a ministry to veterans, The Dave Roever Association, P.O. Box 136130, Fort Worth, Texas 76136. Dave was badly burned in the Vietnam War and has spent his life "helping wounded warriors find their way home." The military requested Dave's involvement with veterans with emotional and physical needs. Ken was born in St. Paul, Minn., to Henry and Clara Korngable. He enjoyed childhood in a home filled with love and the warmth of family, friends and neighbors. He graduated from Johnson High School and immediately joined the Marines with his friends where he served his country with distinction, valor and honor in the Korean War. He served two separate tours on the front lines, earning a Bronze Medal with Combat "V" as well as commendations with recognition from the Commandant of the Marine Corps and other citations. He was devoted to his country. After discharge, he attended business college in St. Paul and later attended both the University of Minnesota and the University of Chicago. He worked first for 3M (Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing) and later joined the old Great Northern Railroad with headquarters in St. Paul. He worked in various positions through 11 mergers with the railroad and was employed as office manager when Burlington Northern Railroad relocated to Fort Worth in 1984. Here, he joined the grain marketing department. After 35 years of service, he requested an early retirement and moved to Tulsa in 1989, returning to Fort Worth in 1992. He especially enjoyed fishing with his sons in Minnesota and Canada and golfing at Pecan Valley. Golf was his game and he really enjoyed his golfing friends. He was privileged to play golf at many fine courses over the years throughout our country. He always enjoyed golfing with a special friend, Sal Blandino, and then heading for their cheeseburger and strawberry shake! (Even after he became ill, Sal helped him to keep up this tradition!) One of his greatest thrills was attending the Masters in Augusta. He also enjoyed watching Dalton play baseball and hearing about the soccer and basketball achievements of Emma and Livvie. Because of his health, he had to miss granddaughters, Jeannie and Margie's weddings in 2011 and the recent birth of a great-grandson. Ken was a gentle and caring man, soft spoken and never spoke ill of anyone. He was a committed Christian, praying and reading his Bible regularly. He loved people and had a heart of mercy and gave generously to anyone that he felt needed help. He was devoted to Jesus, family and friends. He was very well read and thoroughly enjoyed sports of all kinds. His knowledge of recent and past players and statistics of all sports was most amazing. He was an excellent dancer and loved the Big Band sound as well as classical and gospel music and theatrical productions. Ken was very social and loved to dine out and enjoyed traveling, but truly loved his home, coffee, the morning paper along with every sport on television. He first married the love of his life, Jean Strom. They enjoyed a 23-year marriage with their four children until her premature death from multiple sclerosis. He cared for her for 14 years. Also preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Mary Ann Korngable; one brother, Henry "Hank" Korngable; sister-in-law, Carol Korngable; and Jean's sisters, Nancy and Elizabeth. Ken was a faithful member of St. Bartholemew Catholic Church, having serving as usher and in the Loaves and Fishes ministry, Bible study group and a men's prayer team. He also attended Christ Church Assembly of God where he enjoyed the love of many friends. Survivors: Left to cherish his memory forever are his loving wife of 27 years, Ruth Kight Korngable, and her son, Kight Higgins (Cindi) along with their children, Shannon, Brooke and Dalton, all of Fort Worth; son, Steven Korngable (Mary) and granddaughters, Margie Warnemunde (Dan) and great-grandson, Cole Warnemunde, and Jeannie (Tom) Bril; daughters, Barbara Jean Korngable and Lea Ann Homdrom (Jerry), all of Eagan, Minn.; son, David Korngable (Kris) along with granddaughters, Emma and Olivia, of Rochester, Minn.; brother, Loring Korngable; sisters-in-law, Shirley Korngable and Susan of St. Paul, Minn.; as well as many special nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by treasured, lifelong friends, Richard and Phyllis Nowicki of Maplewood, Minn., and Richard Sedin of Henderson, Nev., along with many other dear friends too numerous to name who live in and around Fort Worth and in various locations.

To My Dearest Uncle Ken who has always been such a faithful, generous, and kind man.... you will be missed. I will never forget the kindness you and Ruth showed by traveling from Texas all the way to Minnesota for my youngest son's wedding. How thoughtful and kind that was. Knowing you are with Jesus Our Lord in heaven gives us all consolation to the soul. You brought honor to our family and we were blessed to know you and have you be part of our lives.
