Sam believed in those who worked for him at DCAA
January 3, 2014
Sam was the very best, of many, supervisors that I ever had. He had the highest set of ethical standards that I ever met during 38 years of working for the Defense Contract Audit Agency. And, he was always kind to every person that he met-no matter how they acted toward him. Sam was a mentor to myself and for many, many, many others. Every time anyone spoke with Sam he ended the conversation with "Have a nice day!" When pressure was placed upon Sam, who was the Acting Resident Auditor at General Dynamics-Fort Worth he ALWAYS did the 'right and honorable' thing.

Sam was extremely proud of his daughter and of his grandkids. He spoke often of them. His accomplishments in life were many. He was personally responsible for resolving the $500 dollar "Toilet Seat" or "Hammer" Spare Parts Issue at General Dynamics about 1983 that was extensively reported in the National News Media, as the DCAA Acting Resident Auditor at General Dynamics.

Sam's accomplishments as the very highest quality audit manager were many. But, his accomplishments as a person who cared about people were even greater. He graciously called me a week and a half ago to say he wouldn't be able to send out Christmas Cards this year but that he was thinking of everyone, which was a kindness that I never expected (and was so thankful to receive from Sam.)

I owe many things to Sam for helping me to become better in many ways. But, he extended that very same kindness to everyone that Big Sam met.

We meet many people as we travel the road of life. But, very few have the personal attributes of Big Sam.

My thoughts and prayers are with Joyce and the family.

Sam was very much alive during his tour of planet earth. He lived a life of vivid curiosity and embraced life's uncertainties. Humanity has been diminished by his departure. I wish I had made the effort to know him even better.

To all those who shared the love for Sammy as well as myself, I am so sorry to hearof his passing. Sammy was my nephew by marriage but was more, he was a faithful friend who often called to check on me. He always said he hoped that I had a good day. His calls will be greatly missed. In remembering back: When Sam was a young boy , we went to the "Handley Mills Theater " to see "Gone With The Wind". This was just one of the many enjoyable memories he shared with A.G. and myself. A.G. loved his brothers, sisters and family very much. Keeping you in our prayers. Aunt Loretta Steen McCollough
