Owen Edgar James "Jim" Owen, 88, of Upper Arlington, passed away at his home on Sunday, August 11, 2013. Son of the late William VanBrocklin Owen and Louise Katherine Werle Owen, he was born in Columbus, Ohio on September 12, 1924. A graduate of North High school, he volunteered and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic and assistant chaplain. He returned to Columbus and graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in bacteriology in 1950. Following college, Jim married the love of his life, Phyllis Allen on September 6, 1952, and the two of them began their family and 59 years of marriage. A successful, but more importantly, well-respected Realtor, Jim started his own real estate brokerage in 1956, Jim Owen & Co., Inc., Realtors; and was elected President of both the Columbus Board of Realtors (1972) and the Ohio Association of Realtors (1976). A family man who loved to live, he enjoyed traveling, driving cars, raising horses, working in the garden, and boating at both Lake Erie and Conneaut Lake, PA; where he spent many happy summers since childhood. In retirement, Jim served to provide counseling to men and women coping with life altering disabilities. He was loving, strong, courageous, spontaneous, hilarious at times; and cared deeply for those who surrounded him. He touched many hearts and will be greatly missed. Preceded in death by his wife Phyllis. He is survived by his loving children, James D. (Sue Ann Gaston) Owen and Jennifer L. Owen; grandchildren, David Nathan (Kate Brush) Owen and Bonnie Sarah Owen (Benjamin) Zeff; precious great granddaughter, Violet Lillian Zeff; brothers, Richard Stuart Owen and William VanBrocklin (Eileen) Owen, Jr.; beloved nieces and nephews; dear friends; and loyal dog, Mowcay. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Betty Louise Owen and Margaret Jane Lane, sisters-in-law Jackie Owen, Sarah Owen, and Ellen White and brothers in law Daniel R. Lane and James Allen. Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013 at First Alliance Church, 3750 W. Henderson Road. Rev. Douglas Peterson officiating. Private interment. My parents, Milburn and Mary Loer, worked for Jim for many years as Realtors. They were always proud to be associated with a man they regarded as having high integrity and respect in the community. Maybe they'll be able to have a big staff meeting in heaven along with all those others who preceded Jim in passing. Condolences to the family.
