Memories and Condolences
for Evalyn Huston

Not sure what to say?

Dear Dearest Lloyd, Wilda, Marion, and Louise,
With all of the accolades and fond memories coming from Evalyn's former students, parents, fellow teachers, administrators, and friends, we know Evalyn will surely hear from Our Loving Savior, Evalyn, JOB WELL DONE! And we know that's the voice that counts! While Evalyn was the director of her LIFE STORY, Lloyd was her executive producer! Each of us who encountered Evalyn and her passion for teaching and her compassion for all mankind, (especially her students, her children), walked away a better person. For any child in Evalyn Huston's class, was truly blessed, for she regarded each one a child of God, entrusted to her care.
Her wise understanding of the integral parts of subject, curriculum, child-development, styles of learning, attitudes and demeanor lifted her children, and all of us to a higher plateau in life. She, many times, guided and directed me, as she did her students - and even her doctors as she approached them with information gleaned from her sisters' research. There was always a teachable moment for Evelyn, whether a cumulus cloud above, an expected solar eclipse, a child in need, or an incompetent politician. The world was a delightful wonder to behold for Evalyn, and she knew how to affect change for the better!
Such a dedicated oneness Evalyn and Lloyd shared. Evalyn's eyes twinkled with admiration as she shared news of Lloyd's cantata with the symphony, or his church, or when he demonstrated the sign language he had recently learned. She hid the note Lloyd had packed in her lunch, but shared Lloyd expected her to eat her vegetables and the orange he had peeled for her. Lloyd beamed at Evalyn as she talked about her students, her nephews and nieces, or when she burst into, When the Frost is on the Punkin' in that old Hoosier dialect. How many miles did you walk Lloyd, carrying Evalyn's books and materials down that hallway, and how many miles did you put on your cars as chauffeur and guide for Evalyn's extra-curricular, personalized , life-changing field trips for her students? Those numbers are in her LIFE STORY, and in yours!
Put on your gospel armor, Lloyd, and carry on until, as promised, you meet your Evalyn again

With much love to you, Beth Carpenter

This woman had more impact on my life in school than any other teacher I had. I don't mean that other teachers didn't impact my life too but she was such a very special lady and I learned so much from her and so did a lot of other kids. I believe that all four of us kids in our family had the joy of having her. Now I will be honest and say that at the time I don't think she was my favorite but when you start getting older and think back on who might have had a great impact on your life there was no question it was you Mrs.
Huston. God bless you and God now has another wonderful angel!

Mrs Huston will be deeply missed. She was an outstanding woman. I didn't get the chance to have her as a teacher but I did get the chance for her to teach me for a day. I had trouble understanding the math she was teaching me so she called my mom an told her she was keeping me after school to help me. We stayed there till she knew I had it down packed. The next day she called an invited me to cosi with several of her other students. Mrs Huston made me feel so honored and special for that. I will never forget her her kindness an willingness to help me. My prayers to her family and friends. Altho she is gone she will forever remain in the hearts of all of us that she touched. Thank you for allowing us to have been blessed enough to of known her.

My sympathies to Lloyd and the rest of the family in the passing of an icon. Mrs. Huston had a huge impact on my life and was an inspiration to every student who was lucky enough to have her for a teacher. My favorite memory was going to the library with her and Lloyd and then for ice cream. She truly cared about each and every student and made you feel special. I remember the can of Lysol she kept on her desk. I also fondly remember learning how to square dance in her class. RIP Mrs. Huston. The world would be a much better place with more teachers like you!

I offer my deepest sympathy to Lloyd and extended family on Mrs. Huston's passing. As with many others, Mrs. Huston was my favorite teacher, having taught my 5th grade class at Richard Avenue Elem. She made everyone feel as though they were teacher's pet! I still remember how to do the native dance over moving bamboo sticks on the floor, and an anti-drugs skit that my friend Marilyn Smith and I put on for the class. We also volunteered in her classroom as we moved on to middle school. I only wish I stayed in touch with Mrs. Huston over the years. She inspired me more than she knew. Rest in peace, Mrs. Huston.

Mrs. Huston was an amazing teacher that took time for every student. I was part of the "Enrichment "program for swcs and was having some problems with it. She took me to the Columbus Zoo for a behind the scenes tour of the giraffes because I was to do a report about them for enrichment. She really wanted to help me. I'll always appreciate her. R.I.P. Mrs. Huston.

Mrs. Huston was my sixth grade teacher at Richard Avenue Elementary. I can honestly say I learned more from Mrs. Huston than any other teacher I had in my twelve years in the SWCS! She took the time and made the effort to make me - and every other student - feel important, valued and special. Mrs. Huston and her husband would take some of us to the Columbus Public Library downtown to help pick book for the class ..... it was the first time I had ever been to the Main Library. Today, I work one block from that library and I always think of those trips when I walk by. I fondly remember the Saturday field trip our class took when we were studying different religions, etc., in Social Studies. It was the first time I ever went into a synagogue or a cathedral. Mrs. Huston arranged for us to meet with a Rabbi and a Priest who personally gave us a tour and explained to us about the Jewish and Catholic faiths. The lessons I learned on that trip I keep with me still today! She wasn't just a teacher, she made sure we knew what was going on in the world around us. You were a wonderful and skilled educator, Mrs. Huston! Thank you for all you did for me personally and for all the students who were lucky enough to have walked through your classroom door. With sympathy to your husband and the other family and friends you leave behind. ~

My deepest sympathy to Lloyd and family in the passing of Mrs. Huston. I had Mrs. Huston as my 5th grade teacher at Richard Avenue Elementary in 73-74. My favorite memory of her is going on an evening field trip with a couple of classmates and Mr. and Mrs. Huston to an event to learn about the stars in our solar system. When I learned of her passing I shared with my wife & children on what a great and wonderful teacher she was. I have to believe the world would be different today if all of us were more like her. I am truly blessed to have been one of her students.

When I think back on teachers who had the most impact on my life, I always think of Mrs. Huston. She literally changed our world, one student at a time.

Dear Lloyd, I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Huston's passing. Mrs. Huston was my favorite teacher! She was such an inspiration to me! She is the reason I became a teacher! I was in her Sixth Grade Class. Lloyd, you were her most avid supporter! I could not tell you all the ways both she and you impacted my life! I came from a family with five children and my mother was a stay at home mother. You afforded me opportunities my parents could not have. I remember you taking Carol Nolan and myself out for our first trip to a really nice restaurant! Carol and I dressed up and even wore gloves! Another time you took Marianne Kienle and I to James Whitcomb Riley's home in Indiana! I remember one of her favorite poems that she had us learn was I Wondered Lonely As A Cloud. She gave everyone a daffodil for Easter! The hardest thing I ever did was call her Evalyn when I did my student teaching and teaching at Richard Avenue. It was very important to her for me to treat her as a colleague. May God give you comfort and peace! Carol Snashall Mackey

Sad to hear about the passing of one of the great teachers in the world. Mrs. Huston was my 5th grade teacher (1972-73) at Richard Avenue Elementary School in Grove City, OH. She always had a can of Lysol at her disposal and taught us how to be informed citizens of the world. I particularly remember her lessons on current events and world leaders such as Golda Meir, Anwar Sadat and King Hussein. She thought King Hussein was a "handsome man." Mrs. Huston and her husband, Lloyd, also chaperoned me on my first "date" with a girl from our class as the prize for us winning the contest for best decorated Valentine's box. We went to dinner and to see "The Sound of Music." RIP Mrs. Huston.

As a new teacher at Richard Avenue Elementary in 1980, Evalyn was so inspiring to me! Her calm and loving presence was such a delight to so many children over the years! I remember Evalyn talking about the extra trips she and Lloyd would take with children so that they would have enriching experiences! Evelyn was such a dedicated teacher! She was always so enthusiastic! I am sure that children in Heaven are enjoying her special touch!
Lloyd, you have my deepest sympathy. You were such a loving and delightful couple.
