Gary Bauman Obituary

Bauman, Gary
1946 - 2017
Gary Bauman, age 70, of Pickerington, died suddenly Monday, August 28, 2017 at Mount Carmel East Hospital. He was born November 24, 1946 in Columbus, OH. Gary was a 1965 graduate of Rosary High School. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam; continually celebrating the Marine Corps birthday each year with his buddies at the local VFW. Gary worked for Lucent Technologies, where he only missed one day of work in his 36 years of service. He had a passion for sports, he liked to golf, play softball and snow ski. His plan had always been to get three different generations of family out west on ski trips and this past February his plan was completed. Gary was a member of the Four Seasons Ski Club for many years. He was very involved with his daughter and her activities growing up, even coaching at times; and kept that desire by following every activity of his grandchildren. Gary loved spending time with his family and many friends. He is preceded in death by his father Edward Bauman, aunt Clara Flory. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sharon Bauman; daughter, Nicole (Jay) Woodward; grandchildren, Mason and Sierra Woodward; mother, Virginia M. Bauman; siblings, Melinda (Bob) Ross, Barbara Zizek, Craig (Ginny) Bauman, Jeanette (Dean) Dubois; aunt, Dolores Telerski; many nieces and nephews. Family and friends may visit from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, September 1, at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 550 Hill Rd. N., Pickerington, OH 43147, where a vigil service will be held at 6:45 p.m. followed by the Marines Honor Guard. A funeral mass, officiated by Fr. James Klima, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, at Seton Parish Catholic Church, 600 Hill Rd. N., Pickerington, OH 43147. Online condolences at www.spencefunerahome.com

Not sure what to say?

I can’t believe its been 3 years without you. I never thought I’d survive the loss of either parent. For those who don’t know, I almost lost them both within 2 weeks of each other. By the grace of God and a well placed angel, my Mom survived a widowmaker 2 weeks before my Dad died. Both of them were seemingly healthy so both events were shocking. My world literally crumbled. My parents have always been everything to me. Losing that security, that family unit foundation was crippling. I became broken. I melted into a puddle of sadness. I have always been strong but there wasnt enough strength for this. We had plans. We had more life to experience together. My babies needed more years with their bigger-than-life Grandpa. Life without Gary has a little less joy. I have to make a few more decisions. I have to decide who to vote for all on my own. Don’t worry. You taught me well. I’m capable (most days). And I know your voting principles. You continue to take care of Mom and I even in death. A planner above all planners! Jay has stepped up in unbelievable ways, and I’m so blessed and so thankful for him. He takes care of Mom too. We are now a family unit of 5 instead of 4. We talk about you all the time. The kids beg for Grandpa stories. I wish you could see them. You would be so proud. You would love watching their sports. Yes, both of them are now full blown athletes. Mason threw an amazing touchdown pass the morning of your funeral. I know you saw it. I will teach them as you taught me. We will try to leave the dugout better than we found it. I was so lucky to have you. You shaped so much of who I am. I miss you terribly. I hope you know what you meant to me. And to all your amazing friends who feel the pain of your loss like your family does. I was truly amazed at the outward grief and devastation your friends showed. I’m so grateful to each and every one. Your friends and family saw through the gruff exterior to the amazing, gracious, and generous soul you were. I can’t believe its been 3 years... You are missed.

So many wonderful memories with Gary for many years. He was a "Rooster " to be reckoned with, in so many fun ways. The Ski Club events, golf outings, Seven Springs/The Foggy Goggle, Snowmass Mountain, Friday Happy Hours at The Lounge. His stories left us laughing and wanting more. Sharon, Nicole and all the Bauman family...we are so sorry for your loss.

My condolances to you, Sharon, and the Bauman family. Gary will be missed by all who knew him. It was my pleasure to have known Gary since third grade. He was my best friend throughout grade school and high school even though I couldn't finish my last two years at Rosary. It seems as though I was a regular guest at the Bauman family dinner table in those early years. Those were formable years and have contributed to who I am today. Through thick and thin I could always count on Gary having my back. We competed in sports together, we talked, we cried, and we played using the boundaries of our imaginations.

I recall after high school my draft number was in the single digits. Gary's was a little better. I talked Gary into going down to the Marine Corps Reserve center to enlist in the USMC Reserves. The recruiter said if you can do 50 push ups I will process your enlistment. I did the fifty and Gary didn't but I knew he could. Gary had a higher calling than I in serving his country. As it turned out several of our friends followed Gary's leadership and also enlisted in the Marines.

I asked Gary to stand by me as my best man in my wedding to Elaine and he graciously accepted. I was honored to have him as my best man.

My only regret is that we didn't get to spend much time together in our senior years. It seems that family, careers and other interests sometime get in the way of lifetime relationships. But that does not detract from the lifelong memories that I shared with Gary and the inspiration he has provided me.

Sharon and Nikki and the Bauman family I'm so sorry for your loss Gary was one of a kind. Always enjoyed his company and his friendship. Glad we got to spend time with you both when you were here. In his own unique way he could light up a room. I know I will miss that. My thoughts are with all of you.

Sharon, Craig and family,
It's still hard to absorb the passing of Gary. Truly glad I got to see Sharon, Gary and the kids when they were down in Florida a few weeks ago. Many good memories from over the years (as well as the head butting that two hard headed Jarheads had from time to time). At the end of the day we always remained friends and had a beer or two.
Going to miss the golf trip to Michigan as well as all the conversations we had in which, between the two of us, we pretty much solved every problem in the world.
God bless Gary and family.

Sharon and Nicki I am so sorry to hear about Gary, my thoughts and prayers are with your families..... Your family has always been great neighbors and friends to Linda and Vince, and of course I think of Nicki as another niece.

Over the past several years I have taken the passing of friends with a certain inevitability. Not so with Gary's. I'm stunned and saddened more than I can express. He was a truly unique person. His fiery temper on the one hand but a man that would literally give you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. You didn't have to ask. So many good memories that make me smile. The ski trips; the golf trips; working with him.

Sharon and Craig I don't know what to say that would be adequate. Just know that I share a little of what you must be feeling.

I have the greatest admiration and respect for Uncle Gary. He was an amazing Uncle to my wife Lori, her siblings, and brother to my mother in law Barbara. Uncle Gary was an American Patriot, example of how to be a loving family man to Sharon, Father and Grandfather. I will miss him, and his humor so very much. Even though I can't get around as much anymore, I loved hearing about his presence at family gatherings. Gone entirely too soon! I will miss you Uncle Gary.

Very sad news. Gary was a hoot. He had great stories to tell. Most made you laugh.
I can visualize him walking around at 6200 E Broad St. Cols OH. I found a picture recently
of Sharon and him at a Reds baseball game. Many of us from Western Electric had
gone that day. Prayers for family will be said. Warm regards. Margo Farnham Roop
