Herbert E. Gillen

GILLEN Herbert E. Gillen, age 74, of Upper Arlington, died Sunday, November 16, 2008 at Kobacker House. Born and raised in Noble, Illinois, the son of Herbert L. and Evelyn Shafer Gillen. Herb received a B.S. degree in Health Education from Southern Illinois University in 1956 and a M.A. in Public Health from the University of Michigan in 1960. He served two years in the United States Army. Herb enjoyed a 45 year career at the Ohio State Medical Association where he served in government relations, as Deputy Executive Director, Executive Director and Senior Director. Herb was instrumental in founding the OSMA Insurance Agency where he served as President. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betsy (Holbrook); children, Herbert J. Gillen, Shelli (Alan) Thompson, and Kristi (Jeff) Reynolds. Also survived by grandchildren, Sam Thompson, Katie Thompson, Karlee Reynolds, and Kortney Reynolds; brother, Jim (Dottie) Gillen; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Richard Gillen. Herb was a member of Discover Christian Church. Herb was a lifelong devoted Chicago Cubs fan. Friends may call 1-3 p.m., Wednesday, November 19th at UPPER ARLINGTON DISCOVER CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 2211 Haviland Rd., Upper Arlington 43220, where services will follow at 3 p.m., Wednesday with Pastor Jeff Stone and Pastor Chad Babbert officiating.
