James Fleming Obituary

Fleming James Joseph Fleming passed away at Kendal of Granville on July 13, 2014 at the age of 91. Born July 9, 1923 to Henry James Fleming and Anna Rose Bruski in Chicago, IL. With the passing of his father when he was eleven months old he and his sister and three brothers were raised by the Sisters at Angel Guardian Orphanage until 1936. He completed his schooling at Lane Technical School in Chicago. Joined the US Marines in December 1941 and served two combat duty tours in the Pacific until he was discharged in February 1946 after earning seven ribbon and medals. He married his loving wife of 59 years, Evelyn, in 1948. He joined the Air Force in 1948 and served twenty years in the armed forces until he retired in 1964. He flew 56 combat missions in the Korean War as a tail gunner in a B29. He was awarded a Bronze Star with 4 Oak Leafs for this service in Korea and in his military career earned over twenty medals and ribbons. After retiring from the Air Force at age 40 he started another career with Bell Labs/Lucent in Columbus. He retired from Lucent after 20 years, 2 months and 20 days, the exact amount of time he served in the military. He continued to service his country and community by donating over 66 pints of blood, volunteering at the Eastview Methodist Church Food Pantry and at Telephone Pioneers. Jim was an accomplished softball player earning many trophies and championships and umpired for many years after he retired from playing. He also was an excellent bowler and was on many teams also winning many trophies. Always a kid at heart the neighborhood kids use to ask his wife if he could come out and play. Always happy to toss the ball or give batting tips. After living in east Columbus for 42 years and with the passing of his beloved Evie he moved to Granville in 2006 to live with his daughters Linda Karrenbauer and Nancy Oliver and his son-in-law Mike Oliver. The city boy soon adapted to the country and loved mowing his three acres on his John Deere lawn tractor and tinkering in the garage. He called his new home the ranch. His pride and joy were his two twin grandsons, Glen and John Joseph "JJ" and his new great-grandson Benjamin. Preceded in death by his wife Evelyn, siblings Edwin Henry Thomas and Eleanor. He is survived by his devoted daughters, Nancy Oliver, Linda Karrenbauer; son-in-law, Mike Oliver; grandsons, Glen Karrenbauer and Shannon Karrenbauer and JJ Karrenbauer and Jessica Duda; his great-grandson, Benjamin Karrenbauer; and his brother, William Fleming; along with many nieces and nephews. Friends may call Tuesday 4-7 p.m. EVANS FUNERAL HOME, 4171 E. Livingston Ave. Graveside service and Interment Wednesday 10:30 a.m. Frazeysburg Cemetery. Not sure what to say?

Dear Family,
I went to Eastview Church before moving to Evansville, IN and knew both your Dad and Mom. He was always smiling and willing to help whenever asked. May the Lord wrap each of you in his loving arms and your memories sustain you through this difficult time.
