I would like to express to the Shaffer family that my prayers go with them this week. John and Lois were so kind in hosting us in their home during the summers leading up to the opening of the Appalachian Trail Museum near the family home in Pennsylvania. I was so pleased by the number of people in attendance on our opening day who wished to come visit with John and share their remembrances of good times with the Shaffer family and to congratulate him on the opening of such a splendid facility in Pine Grove Furnace State Park.
John lived his life so that one might easily describe him as 86 years young and his interest in learning new things on many topics was infectious.
John has enriched my life with more than just his memories of his brother Earl's first end to end hike of the Appalachian Trail. His friendship to me was inspiring and I will seek to continue interests in Radio and Historic preservation that he instilled in me for the rest of my life.
