My brother was my best friend from the day I was born.
He was the leader and I was the follower. I didn't mind because he was my very cool big brother. We were only 20 months apart, but when you are younger it seems like a bigger difference.
He was so much fun to be around. He was very funny, he was really smart and very imaginative. We once turned part of our basement into a spaceship, with the control panels underneath our stairs. If any one knows Rod with his art skills and attention to detail, you know it looked pretty legit.
On the note of artistic and attention to detail he had this paint set and he would paint up the neighbor kids and his friends to look like they had black eyes, cuts and bruises. One of the kids went home and his mom really thought he had a black eye. She asked him “Who gave you that black eye?” He said Rod did. Needless to say she was pretty upset when she came over to our house to talk to my mom and brother. My brother didn't seem to mind that she was so upset. He was actually flattered that she thought it was real.
There are so many stories like these. It was never boring growing up in our house.
When my brother was diagnosed with cancer he was concerned about everybody else. He didn't want people to be angry with God. He wanted people to know that all disease is a result of sin and disobedience to God. This happened along time ago in the garden of Eden.
He started a bible study on Wednesday nights. I was always so eager and excited to go because I love to spend time with my brother. I could not wait to see what we were going to learn. He really has a great understanding of God's word and an incredible gift to teach it.
There were times you could tell he was so sick and weak but God was so important to him that he would still have bible study. He would also still make it to church.
Several of us were really struggling with the progression of this disease. Rod told us "It's not about me, it's about God. If God is glorified through my death and souls are saved then so be it." This coming from a man who is married with two young kids. What a faith in God.
I am so glad that my brother totally submitted to God in all of this. He is an awesome example to me and to all who know him.
Psalm 139:13 reads "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mothers womb." The love that God gave me in my heart for my brother and the love that God gave Rod in his heart for me is such a blessing from God that I am so grateful for.
As close as we were Rod didn't want to be my best friend, he wanted God to be my best friend.
I know Rod's concern for everybody here are your souls. Rod is in Heaven happier than he has ever been, living with his best friend.
So my prayer for everyone of you is that Jesus will be your best friend too!
This life is so temporary. Nothing here is worth more than eternity in heaven with God.
