Mr. Mabel was the Boys Dean at Thomas A DeVilbiss High School when I attended (Class of 77). It was a time when we could use positive role models. A time when I (and many others) had very little respect for authority. A time when I (and many others) felt no one understood or cared.

Mr. Mabel cared, he understood. He was an authority, yet he was approachable. He was one of the most solid role models I knew at a time when the world felt unstable. He was firm yet fair.

Mr. Mabel, you did make a difference. A lighthouse on a rocky shore comes to mind. You were there offering a reference point to help us navigate through treacherous waters.

Out of respect that was well earned you were, are and always will be Mr. Mabel to me, I shan't call you by your first name. Thank you Mr. Mabel.

My prayers and condolences to the family and friends Mr. Mabel left behind. You have my deepest sympathies and my thanks for sharing him with all of us.

Cheryl, There are no words that can express both the joy and the sadness that we all feel. Howard brought joy to all who knew him. His passing has also brought sadness to all who knew him. As you can see, Howard brought light and truth and encouragement to all who knew him. Our lives have forever been changed for the better for having been a friend of Howard and of you and your family. Once again we see that the measure of a man's life is not in its length of years, but in the lives of those He touched around him. As you can see, a little bit of Howard Mabel will continue to live in each one of us, and will somehow continue to live in the lives of future generations. INDEED THE LIFE OF HOWARD MABEL WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A LIFE WELL-LIVED. God loves us so much that we can love someone even though we don't see them anymore. As for us,we will try to be there for you as you continue to press on to fulfill what God has called you to do for His glory. Love you, Ken & Marilyn

Dear Cheryl, Loved Howard from the first day I met him! He was such a positive influence on my sons life's . From being Mark and Mike's "gymnastics coach" to football for Matt.

He was a great friend to me. I will also cherish the time I spent with him.

I was privileged to share in his and your sorrow when Hyla was ill in the hospital. In happy and sad times he was simply a wonderful man. I know of no one else who touched so many young and older people's lives in such an amazing and kind way as he did including mine. My God forever keep you at peace. Always remember how special you were to Howard.

Reading through this guest book is proof of all of the lives he touched by simply being himself. I just keep picturing him standing in the hallway @ Start with a great big smile on his face, always willing to give a hand. What a blessing he will be above. May God be with his family & bring them peace as I am certain he will be missed greatly. Thank you Mr. Mabel for always taking that extra step and going above & beyond. I sure hope my children are fortunate enough to run into someone like you during their educational journey.

I am honored to have known Mr. Mabel. It was very plain to see how much students meant to him and how, if given a second chance, things could improve for them. He never gave up. And, most importantly, it didn't matter who you were -- he saw each individual as a person. I'll miss working and talking with Mr. Mabel. Blessings to his family.

I met Howard when I was assigned to sub at Parkland. What a trip! Howard and I became fast friends, especially after we discovered we were both from the same area of NJ (Bergen County/ Passiac County). Howard was an impressive administrator then, and those skillks only got stronger as the years went by. Little did I know that first day at Parkland that Howard and I would become such good friends, and work together in various projects for the next thirty years. While doing my administrative field experience at Devilbiss, I ended up spending much time with Howard and learned a great deal - he loved the students, and they in turn responded so well to him. Later - much later - we worked together on Private Industry Council (PIC) summer programs, and his sincere desire to help students, and make those programs great ones was always obvious. While I haven't seen him in years, I will miss him, and his all encompassing smile. It was always fun to run into him knowing the discussion would turn to the lake, perhaps a Vegas story, or places for dinner in Paterson, NJ - a part of our youth, long past. Howard was a wonderful person and I'm so glad we became friends. Please accept my deepest sympathy on your loss.

How odd that my father, Lawrence Fischer, and Mr. Mabel would be laid to rest in the same week. Dad was much older than Mr. Mabel, but they worked together many years ago at Parkland School. I remember how highly my father spoke of Mr. Mabel around our house, and can still see Dad throwing his head back and laughing loudly whenever they conversed via telephone in the post-Parkland years. My most sincere sympathy to all of Mr. Mabel's family.

Mrs. Mabel, my heart goes out to you and your family at this difficult time. I am extremely saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Mabel. He was a great man!! As I read through the comments from Start High graduates on this web site, I am not surprised to see the vast number of young lives he touched. Mr. Mabel helped a lot of us to become better people and live up to a better vision of ourselves. He always had an upbeat but realistic view on everything. He shared his time and talents with a true love, respect and humor. Thank you Mr. Mabel, for all that you have done in touching so many of us. Rick Keesee SHS '82

I am sorry you are sad. The world has lost one of its finest persons. Howard shares our lake, He is our neighbor. I am so impressed, not surprised, by the beautiful words being used to describe his influence on his students. He made a major difference in the lives of the persons he touched. We are honored to have known him and his fabulous family. As we round the curve, toward our lake house, our hearts will pause in saddness until we meet again. May God hold you in the palm of his hand, that is if He can hold you still that long, and bring your family memories of a joy-filled life well lived. Our love, our prayers and thougght, Margaret and Bill Noe and family. .

Dear Mabels,

Howard played a significant role in my life and I'm sorry to hear of his passing. I pray he passed peacefully and God's presence and grace are comforting all of you. Howard volunteered to drive me to Miamisburg, OH my senior for the Ohio HS State Gymnastics Championship meet. He was my "coach" by default because someone had to represent Start HS from the administration. HE STEPPED-UP! This was my one opportunity to get recruited by college coaches and we talked and listened to R & R the whole way there to get psyched up. Five minutes before the meet began I took one more warm-up Vault and broke my leg with every college coach there watching. I was devastated! I remember him telling me everything would work out and just being strong for me. Well he was right. I was lucky enough to go on to compete in college, win a National Championship, turn pro and perform in 5 world tours and get inducted to the Kent State University Hall of Fame with the likes of Jack Lambert, Lou Holtz, Thurman Munson and Ben Curtis. I now help young adults with life skills, the recruiting process as well as speak nationally to organizations. I tell me story often and Howard will always be one of the supporting cast in my life that has allowed me to become who I am and what I do! Thank you for sharing him with me! I celebrate his life with all of you in fond memories and prayer.

Sincerely,
Mike Gilliam

I do not have many memories of my high school years(thankfully) but being a Male, football player and a Birmingham, I must say I probably spent more time in his presence than most. One of the funniest being at our special pre-graduation meeting he had with all of us from the class of 1985. All the things he would do to us if we screwed around or showed up drunk to graduation. Sorry, but I think a few of us may have shown up with a few less brain cells than promised. A strong person that truly cared about what he did, and who he affected. Not many like that any more. RIP. Be sure to give a shout out to my brother Bobby when you see him.(along with all the other fallen spartans)

Dear Mrs. Mable, Leslie and Shelly, our families have been intertwined since "the apartments" where you met my parents, Bob and Janice Phillips. I remember all your kindnesses, pony rides, childhood birthday parties and the like. I remember how glad I was that my parents' friend was at Start when I was new and how I noticed even as a self involved teen that he was loved, respected and admired by the students and the faculty, but not feared. He was an example of a leader and and a kind and loving man, and I am very, very sorry for your family's loss. As you can see from these entries, he touched lives of people around the entire country, and I hope there is comfort in that for you, that you were married to, or the child of, a great man, beloved of many. There are few of us so very lucky. My heart follows you today, but I believe that Heaven is celebrating with one "helluva" good party, and that Hyla, family and friends (including Bob Phillips) are embracing him and loving him until we can all meet again. May G-d grant you peace.

Howard Mabel....what a great, great man who took the time to get to know people and one who taught me many valuable life lessons! Sept. 1979, I walked into Start for the first day of my Senior year and was conversing with classmates, when Mr. Mabel walked up, put his arm around me and gave me a great big hug! "Hey Matthews, you got a cigarette?" he asked as we were departing for our first class. I seized the opportunity to get on the good side of the Dean of Men. "Here you go Mr. M," I said, while giving him a nearly full pack of Salem's. "Don't forget where you got em'!" A week or so later I was in the restroom on the second floor sneaking a smoke when he walked around the corner and caught me red handed. He picked up the cig I had dropped in an effort to hide it and handed it back to me, while pulling his own from his pocket. "You here every day at this time?" he asked. From there out he'd meet me a few days a week. We'd have a talk and a smoke. "Just remember, if anyone else walks in, I'm not going to be able to do anything for you!" Sure enough a few weeks passed and into the bathroom walked Rochester Gates, the asst. principal of the school. While serving the 3 day, in school suspension for that incident, Howard walked over and gave me a pat on the back. “I told ya!” he smiled. Just a great, great teacher, friend, mentor and role model he was for me and many others. Tough, but oh so fair!
Following HS I hung out at the local neighborhood bar, OB's, and had more than a few cold ones with Howard and many of the other teachers during that period. I'm certain Howard was a great father and husband, as well! My heart goes out to all of you and I want you to know that Howard has always had a place in my heart and will never be forgotten!
May he R.I.P. and may you treasure and hold your memories with him forever!

So sorry to hear of Howard's ('Mr. Mabel') passing. He was a wonderful individual that always had a smile and a 'hello' or 'where you suppose to be' when he saw you in the halls; and he was always ready to help if you reached out to him.
Of course, he was Start HS greatest Gymnastics Coach too! He got me all the way to the State HS Championships.
I was fortunate to see and speak with Mr. Mabel a few times after HS and College - we had good conversations. He was a good friend to my whole family - Dad, Mom, Mike and Matt and he will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Mr Mabel was a class act and a man who ruled with his heart. He would ve done anything for the kids he mentored and he usually did. The world and the students of SHS are better for having him here. He will truly be missed by all who knew him, he will always remain a huge influence on the man that i have become today. I bet hes doing bench presses in heaven as i type this, lol. Great man, huge heart. Dave Weaver class of 1982

Mr Mabel was a great guy and a great influence on all of us students that attended Start High school. I remember getting into a little trouble once and he told me I had to come to school an hour early for three days..then under his breath he said bring me in some donuts tomorrow and well call it good.

I worked in the office /w "Howie" my senior year, have many fond memories of his kind & straight-forward advice. SHS was blessed to have him! He was a wonderful man & influence. He would tell me sometimes about "his" Shelly. :) Sorry he went too soon! God Bless the Mabel family! Shelli '83 SHS
