William Eugene Shiels II

Shiels Dr. William Eugene Shiels II, age 61, of Dublin, Ohio, went home to his Lord at The James Cancer Hospital on Tuesday, May 5, 2015. Preceded in death by his father Richard Shiels, and his mother Marjorie DuBrul Shiels. Survived by his daughters, Courtney Shiels and Moira (Michael Halperin) Shiels; his siblings, Patricia (George) Carr, Hugh (Kathy) Shiels, Mary McCarty, Betty Shiels, Fran (Tom) Eagen, Daniel (Stephanie) Shiels, Marc (Leslie) Shiels, Gina (Mark) Davis, Janet Nelson, Martha (Dave) Summa; and many nieces and nephews. Bill was a graduate of Purcell Marian High School in Cincinnati, OH, Villanova University, and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He served as an army physician for 12 1/2 years including a term as the Radiology Consultant to the Army Surgeon General. Bill's tenure at Nationwide Children's Hospital began in 1995. He was the Chief of Radiology and a Pediatric Interventional Radiologist. Over the course of his innovative career he received numerous awards including a two time recipient of the Society for Pediatric Radiology "John Caffey Gold Medal Award", the SPR "Pioneer Award", and a grant from the Department of Defense to teach new interventional radiology techniques to aid in the removal of shrapnel in wounded veterans. He was a member of St. Brigid of Kildare Church and also regularly attended the Ohio State University's Newman Center. He was a lively, compassionate, and generous man who dedicated his life to helping others. His greatest passions in life were his family and his work as a doctor. Viewing will be at ST. BRIGID OF KILDARE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7179 Avery Road, Dublin, OH 43017 on SUNDAY, MAY 10, 2015 from 4:30-8 p.m., where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on MONDAY, MAY 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Nationwide Children's Hospital to support an endowed chair in his name to continue his research.
