James Champeau Obituary

Champeau, James (Jim) Victor

James Victor Champeau, 84, of Sister Bay, passed away on December 31, 2012, at Ministry Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay. He was born on October 6, 1928, in Sturgeon Bay, to Victor and Wilhemina (Minni) Champeau.

Jim loved growing up on the family farm. After high school he enlisted in the Army and served as a staff sergeant.

He married Joan Vieth on October 1, 1949. The couple resided in Sister Bay, where they raised four children. Together with his brother, Jack, Jim owned and operated the Champeau Floor Covering business for many years. Everything he did, he did well, as he was a perfectionist and fine craftsman.

Service to the village of Sister Bay, which Jim loved so much, was a huge part of his life. His service included ten years on the Village Board, 12 years as Village President, where he was instrumental in enabling the village sewer and water and the marina projects, charter member of the Sister Bay Lions Club, member of the Knights of Columbus, charter member of the Sister Bay Historical Foundation, past commander of the American Legion Billy Wiese Post 127, and Sister Bay Village PTA president. Jim's favorite pastimes were hunting with the Nor-Dor group, landscaping and working in the yard, participating in the "Mighty Lions Players", visiting with friends and backing the Packers.

Jim is survived by his wife, Joan; brother, Dean (Eileen); four children, Nannette, Roberta (Don Bumpus), Marc (Carol), and Patrice. He has three grandchildren, Claire Erickson, Anders (Angie) Erickson, Genevieve Pelrine; and one great-grandchild, Parker Rowe; sisters-in-law, Arlene Champeau, Pat Sunstrom and Corinne Vieth and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor Champeau and Wilhemina Champeau; and one brother, Eugene (Jack) Champeau.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude for the love and care given to Jim at Ministry Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay,

Visitation with the family will be held at Stella Maris Church, Sister Bay on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 10 with a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m. A time of fellowship and remembering will follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Jim's name will be established to the Village of Sister Bay in honor of his love for the community. I am sorry to hear of Jim's passing, I worked for Jim and Jack in the 70's and Jim sure was an artist when it came to his work. Jim also could tell some humorous stories about some of the different characters from Door County that he grew up with, during our lunch or over a beer after work. I enjoyed my time working for Champeau Floor Covering. May God Bless Jim and his family.
