John and I met when he was a Ranger Trainee at Humboldt Redwoods SP in the early 1970's. From the first he was a hard working, dedicated employee who knew how to make work fun. He greatly disliked the bureaucratic part of the job, while loving the rest. You could always tell when he was planning something clever and mischievous from the twinkle in his eye.
One day he was in the woodshop routing a large map of Burlington Campground, a precise and demanding task with a small router bit. At the same time I was installing the first ever siren we received for a patrol vehicle just outside the open door of the shop. When I tested the siren, for some reason John took exception to me not announcing the event in advance. Throughout the years he never missed an opportunity to remind me of the close call he had with the router, just as anyone who knew him would understand.
I greatly miss my fishing and hunting buddy and wonderful friend.
