I had the pleasure of living directly across the hall from Eric and Elaine at Urban Village. We were among the first residents in 2008. I moved in as a bachelor and was later joined by my wife (Tara) and stepdaughter (Kaitlyn). In 2014 we moved to Sherwood Park, interestingly enough to a neighbourhood where many residents are retired refinery professionals. Eric and Elaine epitomized the values of what we now refer to as the greatest generation. They had a very broad sense of community and were genuinely interested in us. We had some great conversations. Although he was very humble, Eric's contributions in the Second World War were profound. Eric was a part of arguably the greatest contribution of the Canadian Navy. He served on a small anti-submarine destroyer known as a Corvette. These crews were tasked with protecting giant supply ships from being pack hunted by German U-Boats. Innovations made by the Canadian Navy in anti-submarine warfare were a profoundly important part of the war effort. Historians speculate that had the Atlantic sea lanes not been liberated, Brittan may have fallen before the US entered the war. Eric shared with me a collection of photos of a U-Boat his crew forced up via depth charge. Obviously this first-hand account was fascinating, but it also reminds us how men and women like Eric freed the world from tyranny and then went home to build great communities. Godspeed Eric, we miss you.

Very sad to hear of Eric's passing. It has been many years since we last saw Eric. I remember the many visits we all had in Calgary and Edmonton all those years ago with Eric & Elaine (Cape) as my mom knew her.
Our sincere condolences to the entire Roberts family from the Shannon family in Calgary.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Eric. He and Elaine were mainstays of the Holyrood community and part of the Esso Refinery families living in close proximity for many years. When I was very young Eric saw that I batted cross-handed. He took me aside and sternly explained why it was unwise and unsafe to do so but then took time to teach me how to bat properly. He was a great neighbour, quietly helping in any way that he could. My sincere good wishes to his family and friends.

Alas, the passing of the torch to the next generation. The last of the original Roberts Clan has gone to join his family. He defied many odds and was the longest surviving sibling - thanks to Auntie Elaine. Rest in peace Uncle, you deserve it!

Dear Elaine. Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Eric. I have awesome memories of the hunting stories he and my dad would tell after their many hunting trips back when I was a youngster.
Eric was very well liked and respected by his co-workers at the refinery. I missed his sense of humour and his friendship after he retired.

Eric was one of my very best friends ever. We golfed and curled together for several years. we also were bridge partners when playing fun bridge versus our wives Barb and Elaine. I also enjoyed some great dinners at the Roberts condo. Elaine is a wonderful cook. Dick O'Connor

My family would like to extend our sincere condolences to the Roberts family. One of my most memorable times with our neighbour, Mr. Roberts, was spending time with him while he trained 'Joe' the black lab to fetch 'dummies' in preparation for hunting season.
