I just read about Brian's passing in New Trail from the U of A, and wanted to send my sincere sympathy to his family. In the early sixties, we both worked at the Hinton swimming pool. Though I have not seen Brian since that time, I haven't forgotten him as a wonderful coach, teacher and friend. I wish you peace in your hearts and that your good memories give you comfort.

My heart goes out to the Heffel family during this very sad time.
Brian was a classmate of mine for 4 years while we were Phys Ed students at U of A. I feel so lucky to have had his friendship during those years.
I hadn't seen you, Irene, and Brian, since the last class reunion, but you were never far from my thoughts.
Brian, you were special. Here's to when we all meet again, free from pain, to share a beverage or several in the great beyond.

Irene and family,

I was very sad to hear about Brian's passing. I did get to visit him back in December, I hope it made that part of his day a little brighter.

He was a wonderful person; very inspiring. A great sense of humor along with a love of sport and fun made any time spent with him enjoyable. I will always have fond memories of our East Coast tour.

I'm not sure if I will be able to make the funeral today, as complications have arisen. If I am unable to make it, please know that you have my deepest sympathies.

January 18, 2013

Dear Irene and Nick,
Brian continues to be our teacher who reminds us to live in the moment - drink in the company of close friends - enjoy good wine - good food and laughing until we cry. Brian was given the opportunity to go ahead and ready the party for us. His love of life, courage, tenacity and incredible sense of humour was admired by everyone who knew him. His wit, dry humour and ability to play off of Irene made any occasion always such great entertainment.
What a powerful and inspirational man. Irene - you have been blessed to live 32 years with Brian. Nick - you have been so fortunate to have Brian be your father, mentor and guide. You have learned from the best there is!
We will treasure all of our silliness, laughter, and memories of our Heffel hangovers.
Love to you both,
Sheilagh , Peter, Rory and Tate O'Dwyer

There are few people that I've met in my life that I've admired and respected more than Mr. Heffel. The positive influence that he made in my and so many other people's lives is a lasting legacy that will echo for a long, long time.

I still tell stories to my children about Mr. Heffel and the great teachers I had at Kind Edward Jr. High in the mid 70's. I respected him and showed up prepared to learn in his classes and this made me a better student. But more than that, his stature as a role model for me as young boy trying to figure out the world made me a better man as I grew up.

My thoughts are with his family and friends. I hope you feel the love and energy coming to you from so many of the people whom he gave so much to.

my condolences to Irene and family. It was a true honour to be a student of Mr. Heffel's....who we all knew simply as Heff. He was always there with a kind word, support. I will never forget the patience he showed the girls in our high school, Bonnie Doon, when we decided that we wanted to have one of the first 4 schools with a girls rugby team. And when we could not afford jersey's he got his boys team to lend us their jersey's.

I truly hope that Heff knew how much his students respected and loved him. Forever in our hearts...never forgotten.
