I got to know Helen in early 2008 when I took over as Exec. Director of the Alberta Avenue Business Association. Although I was not new to professional management, I was new to the BRZ arena @ that time. I had to quckly learn the ins and outs and Helen was always willing and able to answer my questions. She was a wonderful lady. She was feisty. She had a sharp mind. She was results driven. But she also had a heart of gold. As they say, she truly is in a better place right now. Rest in peace Helen.

Respectfully,

Joachim Holtz

Helen was such a lovely lady: energetic and bouncy, bright, adventurous, resourceful, kind, and with a ready laugh and witty retort. I knew Helen through her gigs with my late husband, jazz bassist Stu Millman. Stu's last gig (summer of 2006) was with Helen, when he "sat in" with her, Doug Innes and Tiggy (Jim Tigner). Helen made a difference in the world, spending heaps of energy on family and relationships, music, and the businesses in the 124th Street area. It's so fitting that the city has now named a park in her honor, just north of where Hello Deli served up yummy food and jazz nights. My condolences to her loved ones.

Helen loved humour and often told of funny events in her life. One such event happened when she was somewhere around 17 years of age, living in Toronto. The famed STAN KENTON Orchestra came to Toronto and Helen decided to audition as a vocalist. Of course, Kenton was very impressed and a job was offered. Helen rushed home to inform her mother the great news! Her wise mother put a stop to this saying, 'No daughter of mine will go on the road with a bunch of musicians'!
Helen later arrived in Edmonton where she became one of this cities 'treasures' as an outstanding vocalist. She also became actively involved in community work especially 124 st. Recently, the City of Edmonton dedicated a small park in the name of Helen Nolan as recognition and appreciation of all her great work...(located at 108 Av and 124 st). Helen will be greatly missed by professional musicians and her many, many friends.
