Loved having Muriel for a cousin. She had the best family reunion in Calgory and had such a great passion for her family. A true pioneer!

The most competent OR nurse and quality assurance I ever met. She was fun, witty, and caring. She had so much to offer.

I was describing Muriel to one of my colleagues and thought I would google her name to see if a picture would pop up. So saddened to see of her passing. I worked for her at Foothills from 90-96 and she was a strong patient advocate as well as powerful nurse advocate...she was awesome. So sorry for your loss. I remember all that she did for her staff and for me as she supported my travel to the AORN world convention in Australia when I was a young OR nurse. She made sure I was taken care of :) Thoughts and prayers to your family...I remember her fondly.

So sad to come across this news... for brief time, I had the pleasure to feel a part of her family. I will always remember the borscht, camp coffee, and wisdom.

I'm sorry for the loss of your mom & grandmother. I didn't know your mom personally, although I would have like to have. I work at a hospital facility with AHS in Calgary, and heard her farewell retirement speech at Sait. What a remarkable woman she was. Her speech left an imprint on my life. May she rest in peace. She will always be remembered by many of us.

My thoughts and prayers go to Muriel's family. I had the pleasure to work with Muriel in the OR at the University of Alberta hospital. She was a great mentor and a knowledgeable nurse. A beautiful person.
Rest in peace!

Muriel Shewchuk was the most inspirational and most respected Nurse and Leader that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She always has an open door and an open ear and got down to business to solve problems, deal with issues and make things better. She consistently communicated with the OR Nurses and made them feel included and worth her time. I loved her huge heart and no nonsense approach. She cared about everyone and everything. She always had your back. She is a legend in Perioperative Nursing as she brought so much passion, drive and committment to everything she did.
I have missed her presence greatly in the OR since she left. Things were not the same without Muriel. She was by far the most outstanding leader Foothills OR ever had. She was visible and she was present. She knew your name and she genuinely cared about you and wanted you to succeed. She supported every educational opportunity. She wanted nurses to be the best they could be. She was dearly loved and respected and will be greatly missed by so many.
My heartfelt condolensces go out to Marcia and the entire Shewchuk family. Mamasita will always be with you!

Our hearts and thoughts go out to the family at this time.
Muriel was a longtime Advisory Committee Member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
She contributed greatly to the Clinical Accreditation Program. She will be fondly remembered for her expertise and wit.

Sincerely,
CPSA Clinical Accreditation Services

I worked for Muriel in the '90s and have such good memories. She had high expectations and was there when help was needed. My fondest memory was when Muriel acted as our Santa at the children's Christmas party on our unit (the original Santa couldn't make it). She was such a good sport to do this for the children at very short notice. After the party, she kept the Santa costume for half a day while she went about her work in Foothills Hospital. She made a difference. Nursing is better for her many contributions. To her Family, my condolences.
