LEO PERNISCH Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Jan. 8, 2013.

PERNISCH, Leo
Leo did not want an obituary - he was a man of life and action - so these words are of happy remembrance of a generous man.
Leo had a zest for life and loved people. Entertaining and being with his many friends were his greatest pleasures. Leo made friends with his neighbours, a community from his neighbourhood, and was solidly there to help others.
Leo is survived by his life partner Donna Welsh; his daughter Michelle Slywka and her husband Kevin; his sister Janet Kachman and her husband Clarence; his sister Lorraine Kettle and her husband Rob with daughters Reagan and Rebecca; and the family gathered around him - Linda and Stuart Kempster with children Shawn, Jordan, and Madison; David and Michelle Welsh with children Daniel, Jacob and Elizabeth; Michael and Lisabeth Welsh with children Poppy, Piper, Zachary, Robyn, Aidan, Taylor, Alexander and Brittany; Christopher and Janis Welsh with children Graham, Andrew and Paige.
There will be a Celebration of his life in the spring or summer to which all who wish to remember him are invited. Leo has left us all with many happy memories.

Leo....Today June 22, 2013 is your Special Memory day.I have a bunch of great memories of you pal and they are all great, going back to the late fifties when we first met. I wound up in California and you became a business tycoon in Edmonton. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. One of
these days I will be "up there' to join you and you can give me the tour.
Maybe I'll bring my skiis and you can give me a couple more lessons. CHEERS my friend. We miss you man!

I was so sorry to hear about Leo's passing. I have many good memories as a teenager and older, going up the back lane to the Pernisch house and always being welcome. We had lots of impromptu parties and fun, and Leo was always a great guy. Fond memories will help the family through these difficult times.

I remember growing up next door to the Pernisches in Edmonton, Lorraine was my age, and we became friends. Leo was her handsome, "with it", busy older brother, and in those years, I can add tolerant of us young girls, good sense of humor, warm, friendly. Lorraine and Janet, and the rest of your family, we send our deepest sympathy in the loss of your brother. Sincerely, Peggy Schellenberg (nee Berendt) and the whole Berendt clan

One of my first and best friends in our early years in North Star. Even though our contacts became less frequent as we moved on, I felt that Leo and I always remained close. Although I was not immediately made aware of Leo's passing, I knew something was amiss when the e-mails stopped.
Adios and rest in peace my friend!
My deepest condolences go out to Donna, Michelle,Janet, Lorraine, and the rest of the family.

The many miles separating us prevented our families from being physically close. However, the family bond was strong, Leo and his loved ones were always held in high regard and with much love. I hope Georgina was nearby to meet him as he crossed I know she cared deeply for her brother and all of her family. Janet, Lorraine, Michelle and Donna sending you much love and care as you heal.

We were so saddened to hear of Leo's passing. Leo and I worked together at Ethicon Sutures in the sixties and while he lived in Edmonton and I in Calgary we spent many weekends skiing at Banff and became lifelong friends. He introduced me to Jeanne who would become my wife. He had a great sense of humor and we kept in touch over the years as he was always a good source of jokes and we also continued to bet on the Eskimos and Lions. Most of the time I owed him money and I can visualize him now standing at the Pearly Gates waiting to collect. Until then...So long my friend...I'll miss you and will cherrish my memories of days gone by. Rest in Peace.
Our condolences to Donna and family.

Dear Leo,

I'll nver forget those great Edmonton Eskimo footballs games you took me to when I lived in the City of Champions. Visits to your office and driving around looking at commercial real estate with you inspired me to become a commercial real estate broker and I'm doing just that now in San Diego California. I'll chereish my memories of good times spent with you. Rest in peace my dear cousin and friend...Thomas Dechant

We have been truly blessed to have our dear friend Leo in our lives and will miss his many kindnesses both in thought and action. A better friend we could not have wished for, and we have been truly blessed by his friendhip over the many years since we first met in 1964. We will treasure the memories of the many times we have spent together. Knowing Leo, he has gone to help another lost soul in their time of need. We love you Leo.
