I met Bud in July 2009, shortly before moving Patricia Grant from Edmonton to Victoria BC. She was with Carmen in Victoria and informed me that Bud wanted to take me to dinner at the UofA faculty club and an Edmonton Eskimos football game.
Dinner was engaging and I was immediately struck by this gentleman and his conversational skills.
While riding the Light Rail Transit into the tunnel under downtown, Bud informed me that the Paris metro has wheels on the side of the cars to steady the train as it enters tunnels. I asked when he was in Paris and his answer of 1944 left me speechless. I knew immediately that this was someone I had to get to know better.
My wife Cherry and I saw Bud several times over the last four years and were left better for each encounter. Most recently only a few weeks before he returned to Des Moines this spring.
It was truly a privilege to know a brilliant, honourable gentleman such as Bud.

A great gentleman and a great scientist. He launched my career and many others. His brilliance and cheerful demeanor shone like a bright star, and the world is a poorer place now that he has departed. Dear Bud I wish you all the best on your next adventure and I bid you "Fair winds and following seas".

I have special memories of this professor who taught me embryology in 1971-72 at the U of A. Engaging, organized, and possessing an enthusiasm rarely seen. The quality of teaching I received from Dr. Ruth, and his colleagues in Zoology were rarely matched in the Faculty of Medicine, where I ended up, ultimately pursuing a career in Medicine. Personal regards to Kino..I remember you well from times at Pioneer Ranch Camp. Condolences on your loss of a fine man, and to your extended family.

Dr. Ruth was a highly respected individual. I best remember him as the biology prof with a contagious love for his subject. His classes were more like an adventure, and an hour went by all too quickly. Thanks, Bud, you brought energy and enthusiasm to instil a life-long passion in so many.
