Dear Rosemary, Paul and Amamda,
You may remember Rebekah and our family who lived four blocks from you as Augie was growing up. Although I knew him most as the cute, intelligent and polite elementary friend my daughter hung around with, Rebekah has always considered him one of her friends, and we were both devastated to learn of his sacrifice in Iraq. He grew up to be such a good person. The phrases used most at Morrow on Thursday were caring and funny. In the easily 100 person crowd (with word of mouth notice only) there were friends of his from the rescue squad, Boy Scouts and lifeguards from the pool. Although we were not members of your church, we heard about his work fixing up housing for the rural poor, and distributing bags of food. Many of the 14 girls in his youth group were there, crying as they testified why the loss of Augie is truly a tragedy for this world. Our hearts are heavy with the sadness of our loss. The enormity of your loss is incomprehensible to me. I only hope there will be some comfort to you in knowing that others knew and loved Augie and saw what a wonderful person he was, and that we are all mourning him too. We hugged each other at the service Thursday, and we extend these hugs to you whose loss is so much larger even than ours.
