A TRIBUTE TO Mr. Robert Shaw:

Bob and I attended Irvin High together from 1961 to 1965.

Unfortunately, we just happened to be in different classes all the time. I knew who he was and he knew who I was....and we used to wave at each other in the "hallowed halls of Irvin High"....but I never even really had a chance to talk to Bob and get to know him....however I did attend a few Irvin High basketball games and saw him play extremely well.

In summer of 1965, Bob's brother John and I attended UTEP Calculus classes together.....and John ALWAYS showed up smiling and there were more than a few times that it was so difficult that I wanted to "QUIT" and give up....but John ALWAYS gave me encouragement to keep on ..."keeping on"....so I finally got through with a C+. If not for John Shaw and his ALWAYS positive attitude and encouraging me....I would have definitely FAILED. God Bless John Shaw!!!!

When I entered my freshman year at UT Austin in 1965....one day I was walking to class and I looked across the street and I recognized Bob Shaw....and he recognized me and he crossed the street and came up to me and said "Hey Guy...how's it going? I'm a member of the SAE fraternity (the most prestigious fraternity on the UT campus....but I knew it and he would have never said it).....and he told me to contact him if I would like to attend a party or he could set me up with a date.

I thanked him....and we departed...and I was kind of "overwhelmed" by his "spontaneous act of kindness"....geez....he was a "BMOC....big man on campus" and I was a "nobody".....but he took his valuable time to recognize me as a fellow graduate from Irvin High.....and offered to help me. Just a great guy!

At the time, I was feeling a bit depressed about being the "little west Texas kid from El Paso" thrust into the big leagues of UT AUSTIN and Bob helped me to feel more "at home"....because of his "welcoming act". That act of kindness by Bob..made a huge impact on my attitude about trying to make myself successful at UT.

I've NEVER forgotten that act of kindness....though it has been over a half a century!!!!

Thank you Mr. Robert Shaw. You achieved great accomplishments throughout your career...whilst exalting and elevating others below you along the way....and I believe that qualifies you for "greatness" during your lifetime.

God Bless you Bob...during your great welcoming into God's eternal home for the "good guys". I love you and your family very much!
