I think this is a one year anniversary. I worked for the Teacher Education Directorate, Ministry of Education, Kabul in 2012. I didn't meet Anne personally, although we worked there at the same time. I couldn't get to Kandahar because of the danger, but reviewed their teacher education data. Anne's efforts, hard work, heart made a valuable difference for Afghans, our country, and humankind. She is the best, she is eternal. She gives me strength for my work.
I worked at the Ministry of Education in Kabul late in 2012, evaluating teacher education programs. Now, I keep her picture near my work desk. I know the needs she met, and the difference she made for Afghans and our country. --Ken Peterson (Tualatin, OR)
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
I am very sorry for your loss and offer my prayers and deepest condolences. God Bless.
My sincere condolences to you and family. My prayers are with you all. Much love.
Acknowledging your loss. With deepest sympathy. God bless.
My daughter is also working in international development and she has spent and will spend more time in
Afghanistan. I feel your loss and I hope that knowing that others keep you in their thoughts will give you some solace. Our children are trying to bridge a very difficult cultural gap and they need to be acknowledged and remembered for their spirit as well as their effort to help bring peace to our very troubled world.
If we secure ourselves against the storms of this life by grounding our souls in the Words of our God, covering our sorrows within his loving embrace, and trusting his strength will support our weaken hearts,we have nothing to fear.We don't need to understand it all,we just need to hold his hand to find peace. He will guide us through all of life's storms, even this one.
Our deepest heartfelt sympathies to the entire Smedinghoff family.
My husband is currently serving at the Embassy in Kabul; he, along with many of our friends, knew Anne. The Foreign Service is a small community. As a FSO myself (and a PD officer) I may not have known her, but I feel like I did. And I am so very, very sorry for your loss.

God Bless the Smedinghoff family. Your Anne was a bright light carrying love and hope to those who were in darkness. No words of sympathy can address your loss...her death is a loss for all of us....
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:….....
A time to be born, and a time to die……
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace...
I did not know Anne...but seems she must have been a beaon of peace.

To the Smedinghoff family-We did not know your daughter, but have read about her and heard about the impact of her life in her family, hometown, our nation and our world. Our world is often a hurting, dangerous place, and Anne so obviously made a difference. May her light, that shone so briefly here on earth, be a testament and a light and an inspiration to those she worked with, her friends and you, her family; to help you to keep faith, keep looking up and to further what she had already accomplished! For Anne's soul, her family and friends. For the hope of Peace which would prevent the existence of "war zones" in the first place. PEACE ON EARTH.
Anne's wonderful mother, Mary Tokarski ('71), was a friend as well as a classmate along with Mary's sister, Diane ('71 also). It's not surprising that Mary's child would be kind and giving since those are qualities I knew her mother to have. The entire Smedinghoff family is in our thoughts & prayers. As the father of a FSO working in a dangerous assignment, I am experiencing as my nightmare your reality. Your daughter could be my own daughter or son, imbued with a sense of adventure matched with a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others whom she has never met.
I extend to you my deepest sympathies to you as I would a family member. I hope your tears are soon dried by the pride of what she accomplished so quickly and the inspiration that she is to all of us.
Mr. and Mrs. Smedinghoff and family,
To say there are truly no words at the great sadness I feel upon hearing of Anne's untimely passing, is more than an understatement. When I read the news last evening I kept saying "no this can't be". I can only imagine how these sentiments are resounding even more in each of you.
I have so many wonderful memories of Anne and her lovely, quiet presence in my classroom and her great spirit which flowed throughout Fenwick. I have never forgotten her.
I will offer Mass for her and for each of you. You hold a very particular place in my heart, and from that place I entreat our Loving Father to give you the peace, healing and consolation that only He is able to offer you now and for years to come.
My love and prayers,

What a phenomenal young woman...who had a passion for living and giving, died helping others, is now known by the world....Bless her spirit! May the memories of her life and her smile, be a comfort to the Smedinghoff family and friends..
It is hard to understand why God takes our young. I lost a sibling at the age of 24. It still is hard many years later, but the pain does lessen with time.
May God bless you in this most difficult time......
Tom, I am saddened to hear of the tragic and senseless atrocity concerning your beautiful daughter Anne. My thoughts and my prayers are with you and your family. May you gain strength from the outpouring of affection from those who knew and loved her. Peggy Walker (Vance).
My deepest sympathy to the family. May you find comfort in Ps. 37:9,- 11, 29.
There are no words from a stranger which could provide solace to Anne's family. There is only this thought...Anne makes us all proud to be American. She was a righteous person!
This is the first time I've heard of a person named Anne Smedinghoff. She sounds like a loving, dedicated person…a type of person that everyone should have the opportunity to know in their lifetime… Her family and friends are and remain truly blessed. May the peace of God flood their hearts.
May God bless her family and friends in this time of grief and loss, and may they take comfort in the knowledge that her life truly changed the world, one life at a time.
Prayers for those who loved Anne. As a Father I can only imagine the grief. I also know the pride that she brought to all. I worked at the US Embassy in Kabul, in the Security Department for over five years. I know the hollow feeling when someone from the Embassy is killed. I hope time brings the Family peace.
