John and Jane, wanted to let you know that we continue to lift you and Eric's wife up in prayer daily. We cannot imagine how heart broken you are. I remember Eric growing up here and seeing him in the halls of Ashe Central. We hope the coming days will bring you peace and comfort. Eric was definitely a hero. We know that you were very proud of your son. Rest in comfort knowing that his home town of Jefferson has reached out in prayer for you and family. If there is anything we can do for you please feel free to let us know. Praying the Lord's blessings upon you. Cindy and Joe Cochrane

We were the last in person civilians/hikers to see and speak to Eric. As the weeks unfold- Joy views it as surreal and Tex it breaks him up deeply as it reminds him when he lost his son. This has been difficult for us to realize the men we saw and spoke to were the 19 that died. Our hearts and prayers go out to you- Eric was definitely kind, warm, generous and a gentle man like they stated in the article. We wish we could turn back the clock- it is just too sad- things happened beyond anyone's control- we witnessed the sudden change in wind & the fast fierceness of the fire. Those were all brave men. We salute them as heroes. The Hikers, Tex and Joy
