Well Uncle Al another year has gone by without you. I think of you often and not just around this time of year. I am thankful for the memories I have with you growing up. You always made me smile. Just sitting here I am thinking about your laugh and it makes me smile. You always took care of us kids. I know you are up in heaven with your brothers and sisters, probably playing pinnacle or something having a glass of champagne;) please continue to watch over your baby brother as he could use a watchful eye during his challenging time. I love you to the moon, even though we never made it there lol thank you for loving me unconditionally. Linner Dinner

Just thinking about you Uncle Al and remembering so many things that you did and how very special you always treated me. You had the gift of being the charmer and being funny and oh so giving. How I wish that I could have time back so that I could have seen you as an adult. I feel I have your spirit in me and you live through some of my ways of being kind and complimentary to everyone. I needed those loving and thoughtful gestures from you at that time in my young life. I think about you and Daddy and Uncle Bob hanging out together and it brings a smile to my heart. I miss my Dad, Herb Somerder, so very much. But I know I will see you all again....in heaven. Please continue to be my Angels and help guide me in wonderful directions. I thank you dearly for thinking and planning for your neices and nephews to have such a gift from you. So very giving and thoughtful. It means so much that you cared that much for all of us. So to my favorite Uncle I send you big hugs and blessings and a big kiss and smile...you changed my life Uncle Al when I was young and you are giving me that opportunity again now. So how many Angels have you captivated with your charm and wit so far? LOL...I know Heaven isn't quite the same since you showed up, in a great way. Missing you and loving you always. Your beloved neice,
Cathy Somerder

Hello Uncle Al! I've been thinking about you a lot these days. I remember you telling us as kids you were going to take us to the moon in your jet and we would sit up and have our bags packed. I would wait up till I fell asleep. You would take us to McDonald's. I had my own seat in your Cadillac. You used an embossing gun to out my name in there and I felt so special. You took care of all us kids when we were young. My favorite is when you had someone play Santa when dad was in Vietnam. I truly believed in Santa after that as I tried to pull his beard and it was stuck on there. We heard the clicking sound on the roof like Santana reindeer. You made childhood fun. Loved coming to the house and spinning on bar stools. You always had crisp one dollar bills. I wish I still had the letters you sent me while I was in the Navy. I know you were proud of me. Always tried to get you to come visit even when I was stationed in Hawaii. Thank you for loving me and enriching my life. I miss you dearly. I love you!

There is no question that Al is going to be greatly missed by many people to whom he set such a shining and cheerful example. I speak from the standpoint of one of Al's YMCA buddies, his attorney, his friend. I was honored to be all of these to him.
Al was the consummate gentleman -- gentle and kind in every way you can imagine the finest manifestations of those attributes. He was also a fascinating human being -- smart as a whip, knowlegeable about history, insightful amd wise in human affairs, a talented and accomplished pilot, an avid runner and fitness guy.
There is a great story about a loyal friend at the Downtown Y, a lovely woman whom Al befriended when she needed a friend and someone to encourage her to get onto the treadmill (as he did) and stick with a daily routine to help get her own life into a better order. This wonderful woman says to all who will listen to her that the sole reason she came back to the treadmill, day after day, week after week, for the past four years, is simply because of the steady friendship and encouragement of Al. And one of the most interesting aspects about this story is that it all happened AFTER Al had fallen, was in the hospital and rehab for several months with a severe closed head injury and managed to get himself back to his daily work out routine at the Y -- something most of us who knew and loved Al would never have thought he could do because of the severity of his own injuries and recuperation.
But he did and there he was -- thinking of others before himself -- extending himself to a total stranger who looked to him for help and needed the medicine he was so uniquely able to give.
This is the man that Al Somerder was in real life.
I will never, ever forget the many stories Al told me of his involvement during WWII as a lead pilot in Belgium -- he would never volunteer the stories of his exploits, but he would answer all the questions I asked. I asked many questions and Al's answers about his adventures and exploits were simply spellbinding. He, like the many others of his generation who gave so much in sacrifice for our freedom during the Second World War, was humble about his achievements -- but those achievements were many and distinguished. He was a truly humble and quiet man about his fascinating past.
It was utter joy to be around this great man and to be in his presence. Al made you feel that you were special and very important in life.
He always had time for you and always had good word to pass along. Never once did I hear him utter a derogatory thing about others; he was uniformly kind, uniformly upbeat. There were no bad days to him.
Al Somerder, just like his brothers and sisters and neices and nephews, made our world a much better place, a place that shows us the higher path, the grander way, and he just knew how to bring out the best in others. His presence, his kindness, his optimism, his encouragement, his joy of living will be sorely missed -- and always remembered.
Godspeed our wonderful and one-of-a-kind friend, Albert. We will never, ever forget all you taught us.

You are the man..Uncle Al...Smooth and sharp and funny and cool and debonair...When I met you, you took my breath away...truly with that big old bear hug you gave me. And the way you smiled and winked at me...I thought I was truly special. You gave us your best and took us all around and the way you made me feel I said that is how I want to make others feel...special. So thank you for the gift of loving me so well and for passing it on to me...I just hope I do it half as well. I always felt we had something in common in this crazy world, I hope you always felt my love and adoration for you even though we weren't around each other after my late teen years. One good thing about all this is that My dad and Uncle Bob will be able to be with you again.....My goodness ....Please have a lot of fun. I love you my Favorite Uncle Al...God bless you.-Cathy Somerder(Sarasota, FL)
