Assunta Mazza Obituary

Assunta "Suzie" Scalise Mazza, age 91, of North East, died on Friday, January 25, 2013 at UMPC Hamot. She was born on December 4, 1921 in Serrastretta, Italy, to the late Luigi and Maria Giglotti Scalise. Assunta had lived in the North East community since 1957, where she owned and operated a grape farm with her husband, the late Angelo Mazza, whom she married June 1, 1939. In earlier years, she was employed at a quilting-dress shop in Long Island, N.Y. Assunta was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening and knitting. Besides her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Luigi Geno Mazza, four brothers and five sisters. She will be sadly missed by her sons, Tony Mazza (Linda) of North East and Rick Mazza (Kim) of North East; a daughter, Rachel Mazza Borzilleri of Fredonia, N.Y.; daughter-in-law, Kathy Englert Mazza; grandchildren, Tony Mazza (Connie), Mike Mazza (Karen), James Mazza, Jonathan Borzilleri, Christina Mazza Costello (Chris), David Mazza (fiancé Karla), Ralph Mazza (fiancé Ruth), Jeffrey Mazza (Kristie), and Amy Mazza; great-grandchildren, Tony, Nick, Sophie, Aiden, and Elle; also several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East, on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 and are invited to attend a prayer service on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Gregory Church, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Nursing Service of North East, 7 Park Street, or St. Gregory Church, 136 West Main Road North East, PA 16428.
