Erlene Smith Obituary

Erlene Smith's inquisitive and intelligent mind served her well when she and her husband joined President Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter at the White House.
The Smiths moved to Washington after Carter nominated Bobby as Assistant Secretary of Agriculture in 1978, and Erlene Smith worked closely with the first lady. "One big contribution she had was she did scrapbooks for the (Carter) family, so she was privy to tons of pictures and information," said her daughter Victoria Smith.
Erlene Smith, 87, of Winder, died June 7 of complications from a lung condition she had battled for several years. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. June 26 at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Winder. Read the news obituary

I saw in the Constitution where your wonderfully fun Mother, Erlene passed away and please know that my heart and thoughts are with you. What a great lady, fun person and loving Mother she was and how I enjoyed her as well as "the one and only GIRLIE!!" Now y'all truly had the woman power going on for you. I had total intentions of being at the service today, took a sleeping pill at 3am because that was "last resort" and here I am just awake at 10:10!! Please please please know that I am there in my thoughts and my prayers are with you all. Mother's are so very precious and we both had great ones and I wanted you to know that YOUR Erlene was extra special to me and I am a better person for knowing her as well as that wonderfully, delightful grandmother of yours, "Everyone's Girlie!!!" Bless you dear friend. Susan Sharpe Dickens

Janet and Vickie, Becky sent me this info. My Father died at 87 and then two years later my Mother at 87. Guess that might be my lucky number, too. Please know that you can look up and talk to people you love in heaven and know they hear you. Mary Faye

My condolences to the entire family, but especially to Shawn and Tim. I worked with Erlene on several projects while a member at First Christian and grew to love her. She was a special lady. We will be out of town and will be unable to attend the service, but will be thinking of and praying for you.

Dear Smith Family,

Mrs. Smith was everything that makes a woman a lady. She was refined, beautiful and had style! She was gracious, kind, and welcoming. I think the world of her. So does my mother. (We still hold her in high regard so I don't write this in past tense.) In fact, when my mother and spoke last Friday and she told me about Mrs. Smith's death, she told me about the respect and love that she had for her friend, Erlene Smith. My mother remembered that as she moved her membership to and as my father joined, the First Christian Church in Winder, it was Erlene Smith who first greeted them and welcomed them. So many years ago, my parents knew some others better within the congregation, but it was this dear lady, Erlene Smith, who reached out to them. With enthusiasm, she approached and gladly greeted and embraced this young couple, to welcome them as members of the congregation. My mother told me, "I will always love her for many things as I came to know her better but I started loving her right then. It was so sweet and so like her!" I think that is the sign of a truly remarkable person; we remember just when we met them and just how they affected us. Mrs. Smith had the biggest smile and the "twinklingest" eyes of anyone ever. In spirit, I know that she will shine brightly as she takes her light home to her Maker. I know that He will be so proud of what she has done with the light that He entrusted to her to kindle and allow to grow within her heart. Her radiance has not been extinguished through death. Instead, the light that she takes with her is more radiant and embers remain of the love she gave to so many. In this, the afterglow of a life beautifully and sweetly lived remains in the hearts of those she touched. God's love connects us in life and beyond the boundary of life and death. In you, her family, her light continues. I know that it is in very good hearts! She knows it too!
My sincere sympathy and love,

Scott Patrick
