Eugene Cernan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 16, 2017.
Eugene "Gene" Cernan, the former NASA astronaut who remains the last human being to date to set foot on the surface of the moon, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, according to NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs. He was 82.

“We are saddened by the loss of retired NASA astronaut Gene Cernan,” the space agency tweeted, “the last man to walk on the moon.”

The National Air and Space Museum also tweeted a tribute for Cernan: “We mourn the loss of our friend Gene Cernan, the Last Man on the moon and a hero for the ages. Godspeed the Commander of Apollo 17.”

Cernan was one of NASA's early generation of astronauts, entering the agency in 1963 as part of the Gemini program. He first went to space as a crew member of Gemini 9A June 3, 1966. It was the mission where he became the second American, and the third person ever, to exit his spacecraft while in orbit – what astronauts refer to as extravehicular activity, or EVA, and most people refer to as a spacewalk. It was a risky endeavor: NASA was still working out how best to outfit an astronaut for walking in space, and Cernan found that his suit quickly became stiff and immobile.

Ultimately, he became one of only two astronauts to fly to the moon twice. As the lunar module pilot of Apollo 10 in May 1969, his lunar orbit paved the way for Apollo 11’s landing two months later. And as the commander of Apollo 17 in December 1972, the last moon mission to date, Cernan and his Apollo 17 crew member Harrison H. (Jack) Schmitt spent more than 73 hours on the moon’s surface.

"America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow," Cernan said from the moon’s Taurus-Littrow Valley Dec. 14, 1972, as he prepared to reboard his spacecraft to lift off and return home. "As we leave the moon and Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, we shall return with peace and hope for all mankind."

Cernan was a native of Chicago, Illinois. He attended Purdue University in neighboring Indiana, and after graduating, he spent five years as a U.S. Navy aviator before joining NASA. He retired from both the Navy and NASA in 1976 and entered the private business world. Later, he became a contributor on the ABC television morning show, “Good Morning America,” filing reports for its “Breakthrough” segment on health, science, and medicine.

He co-wrote his autobiography in 1999 titled “The Last Man on the Moon.” A documentary based on his book and with the same title was released in 2016.

Cernan and his wife, Jan Nanna Cernan, had three daughters and one grandchild.

A truly great man! Every flight with CPT Cernan and his family was a great honor. To hear of his missions to the moon while cruising at 49,000ft has been a great highlight of my aviation career. To be able to call Geno a friend is an even greater honor.
The world was truly a brighter place with you in it!

So saddened to hear of the passing of this great man. He expressed better than any astronaut the human and emotional experience of Apollo. A truly inspirational person. I will miss his interviews and recollections. May his family take great comfort in his contribution to humanity.

I was saddened by Gene's passing. He was one of the last true American heroes. He was a good man and mentor, and it was an honor to know him.

My oldest daughter drew a picture for him in 1993 when she was 7 years old. He gave me the drawing a couple of days later, and asked me to put it in her scrapbook.
He said "as much as it means to me, it will mean more to her when she is older, and I'm gone" He winked and smiled. He was right. He will be missed.

Godspeed, Gene Cernan

I am so saddened by the passing of Commander Gene Cernan. I still remember his last words on the moon :
As we leave the Moon and Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came, and God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind
He was and he is a hero of my childhood.
I am sure, he is on his journey to the stars now.
I will never forget you.
Goodspeed The Crew of Apollo 17.

Dear Cernan Family,
It was sad to learn of the news of CAPT Cernan's passing.
Gene and my dad, Bob, served together in the Naval Aviation Community, and were Aeronautical Engineering classmates in the Naval Postgraduate School, Class 1963.
Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your Husband, Father, Grandfather, and our family friend Gene. He was one fine Naval Aviator, US Astronaut whom we lived vicariously through the Gemini and Apollo Programs, on Gemni 9A, Apollo 10, and Apollo 17. We are grateful to have known him.
Know that my thoughts and prayers are with all The Cernan family and friends during this difficult time.
Very Respectfully,
Jeff Hoare

Tracy, Marion & Family,

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of your father, Gene. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you even though we are in North Texas. Though none of us were able to get to know Gene, we loved hearing and learning more about him through the ABC News release and the Houston Chronicle article thoughtfully written by you.

Gene definitely lived life to its fullest, was highly decorated, but most of all it seems that he deeply loved his family, his country and wholeheartedly embraced the challenges that aviation and aerospace brought his way.

A great man like Gene will never be forgotten.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of such a special man as Mr. Cernan. He was a most gracious person to all he met and one of the kindest gentlemen a person could ever have the pleasure to meet. Having had the opportunity to meet Mr. Cernan on more than one occasion, it was always hard to believe I was talking, eating, joking and just being blessed to be in the presence of such a patriot and hero. I know that Mr. Cernan did so many things for my family over the years, and that he will be missed by us all. Our hearts are broken now but I know that Gene is once again in the heavens.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is always so very hard to lose a loved one in death and our loving Heavenly Father is very aware and understand your painful loss. He will listen to your prayer and pay attention to your pleas for help because he is near

Sincere sympathy to the Cernan family!
It was 1964 when newly selected Astronaut Gene Cernan spoke to the student body of Proviso West H.S.(He was a Proviso graduate.) My sister and I were students and were deeply inspired by his speech. The band played "Anchors Aweigh" and a young Navy captain named Gene Cernan spoke. He was so inspiring that my sister and I decided to write a poem about him, which could be sung to the tune of "Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier." Here's the poem:
He's our Man from old Proviso
1.Graduated from Proviso in '52, after that he went on to Purdue! Earned his wings flyin' Navy planes, next he'll travel in orbital lanes.
REFRAIN: Eugene, Eugene Cernan, Hero of the space frontier!
2. First they briefed him about NASA, then he met the others from Glenn to Schirra. He learned about Apollo and Gemini, soon he'll blast off from Cape Kennedy! REFRAIN
3. One day they'll report all systems are "Go!" Then they'll be ready for the really big show! He'll wear a special suit from his helmet to his socks and apply why he learned on the "idiot box." REFRAIN
4. After his trip he'll come back home, acclaimed for his feat from Chicago to Rome! He'll attend many a hero's rodeo, he's our man from old Proviso!" REFRAIN
(We never dreamed Astronaut Cernan would become the last man to walk on the moon!!!) A classmate said his parents live on her block, so she brought the poem to them and they mailed it to him! He was quite thrilled and wrote us a nice letter!
I reconnected with Astronaut Cernan during my last year of teaching, in 2003-2004, asking him if he could come to our school and talk with the students. He declined, but graciously sent us autographed pictures. After writing "Last man on the Moon" he's been so busy, he had not even time to visit all 9 of his grandchildren's schools! Thanks for the inspiration, Astronaut Cernan! You will truly be missed!

I am Italian and I was a young girl in the days of the Apollo program. In 2009, Italian television produced a special on the 40th Anniversary of Apollo 11, and Gene Cernan was interviewed in the final part as the last man to have left the moon. He came across as so agreeable, and his words, his gestures, the look in his eyes were so intense that I have kept that recording since then, and often rewatched it. Then I read Cernan's beautiful autobiography and I bought his new documentary on dvd just last December. It was so well made, and so poignant, that I copied it onto my computer so I could easily rewatch it whenever I wanted. That was no longer than three weeks ago - I could never imagine he would leave so soon, it was such sad news. I will remember him with enormous respect and thankfulness for his inspiration. May you enjoy your journey and continue exploring all the heavens, brave, fascinating, and so very handsome Captain Cernan.

My wife and I met Mr. Cernan unexpectedly at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. What a "down to Earth" person. I have his autographed book sitting on my desk here at home. "Best Wishes From the Man on the Moon" he wrote. It was a thrill to meet him and shake his hand, just knowing that he was one of the few that walked on the moon. We were a bit "Star" struck" and he made us feel at ease. An amazing human being.

I had the great honor and privilege of meeting Capt. Cernan in November of 1999 at the opening gala of the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame in Galveston, TX. I was impressed by his gregarious, approachable and friendly "down-to-earth" demeanor as we spoke about flying and his book "The Last Man on the Moon". Many in our generation owe our choice of a flying career to the contributions of astronauts to the profession as they represented the ultimate achievement in flying in our young hearts and minds during the Apollo program. I made sure to thank him personally for that and he was genuinely pleased to hear it. A great loss... Condolences to his family and friends.
