Cobie Bean Obituary

YORK Cobie Lynn Bean, 44, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at her home in Columbia. She was the companion of Hans Shore. She is survived by her loving parents, Joan and Mike Bean of Dover; sister, Jodi Myers and her husband, Dan, nephew, Ben, and niece, Sara; sister, Missy Page and her husband, Tim, nephew, Josh, and niece, Olivia; brother Jared Bean and his wife, Heather, nephew, Evan, and niece, Lindsay; and numerous loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Cobie Bean is also survived by countless friends who, along with her family will miss her - her big personality, her thunderous laugh, and her loving free spirit. Her groups of friends are as varied as they are loving. Her high school friends, college friends, sorority sisters, the hippies, the musicians, the sandbar river rats, the bar crowd, the new, and the old. She touched many lives with her enthusiasm and joy. Cobie Lynn Bean was born in York Hospital on May 17, 1969. She graduated from Central York High School in 1987 and attended Shippensburg University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. Cobie found her calling and studied Western Herbalism at Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies in Boulder, Colo. There she learned and fostered her passion for showing the help that herbal medicine could give to those she touched. Cobie helped scores of others in her many roles in the social work field, always sacrificing her time and giving herself to those who needed her. It was hard and frustrating work but she never lost her focus on those she helped directly. Cobie found where she most belonged at her bungalow at Long Level on the Susquehanna River. A river rat her whole life, the cottage was a place for family and friends to gather and share their love of the river, conversation, and the beauty of our great York County. Cobie Bean will be missed and remembered by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 28, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E. Market St. York. A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Stewards of the Lower Susquehanna, 2098 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, PA 17368. www.etzweiler.com

I am so blown away. I had no idea Cobie passed away. She has helped my family tremendously. She was always a bright & happy spirit. Always bubbly. And had a smile & laugh that would light up a room. I haven't been in contact with her in quite sometime. I actually tried to contact her today. Unfortunately I found out the bad news. I am so sorry for your loss. Heaven definitely has gained an angel. She will forever be missed.

Cobie was a light in our lives at one of the hardest and darkest times in our family. Her heart was full of love and compassion. She walked with us side by side and never let up in the time of battle nor did she cease to care and demonstrate her keen intuitive nature and strong intellect. She laughed in the face of battle and she pursued her goals and used all of her great skills to bring peace in difficult situations. She always had a spirit of excellence and a lot of grace. But even more than that at the end of the day, we all became friends. Her flair and wit are well remembered. She was a professional, but more than that she was able to touch a precious heart that needed to know that someone, who would not give up, was on his side. She had a tremendous influence on our lives. I saw her fairly recently and we reminisced about all we had journeyed through together and the victories that we had won. I am pleased that I had the opportunity to share all those years and that time of remembrance with her. It is always good to thank someone when you can and so that day together was very special to me especially now knowing that she is gone. It was a blessing to have known her and have shared so much with her. I am sorry that we did not hear of her passing until now because it would have been our honor to offer our love to her family and friends because that is what she did for us. You will be greatly missed Cobie! Thank you to her mother and father for raising such a dynamic loving woman and sharing her with all of us!

I have had the privilege of getting to know Cobie @ Ship and we became great friends. Eventually we became roommates in an apartment one summer there, along w/ some of her AST sisters. After that, Cobie, Steph, myself and Rick lived together for a couple years. It was like Three's Company meets the Odd Couple. Many great memories and crazy times during these years that I will never forget. It was the time of our lives... Cobie was like a sister to me. After we graduated from Ship, we went our separate ways and didn't really sync up. Remember, there wasn't even MS Windows in 1992!!. Fast forward 2 decades and social media kicked in and we found her. The 4 roommates have been having our "Roomie Reunion" on the River for the past couple years (Thanks Papa & Momma Bean!) and was so awesome seeing Cobie so comfortable and as groovy and peaceful as she's ever been. Even though we were separate for 20 years, when we all got together, it was like we never left...

We were all just starting up our conversations and texts about when we would plan this year's trip to our little reunion River Fest...

I'm so sad, I'm mad, I feel cheated, that after so long of not seeing her and missing her, and then finally getting together again but only for a couple years... I was really thinking about her a bunch these past couple months. Always thought I was too busy w/ kids, family, work, whatever to give her a call... so I'd send some silly email or goofy pics of me and she'd LOL and txt me back "Fruitcake!!" Wow how I'm going to miss her more now than ever... I was so glad to see her w/ Hans, such a cool dude, her soul mate. I was so happy for them...

I hope all of us keeps Cobie's memories, and her laugh, close to our hearts always. May she continue to live w/in each of us and think of her often w/ a smile on our face. I've prayed, and continue to do so, for Cobie, her Family, Friends, Hans... all of us, that we are comforted by the surrounding love of each other and of our God. I have faith, and know that one day, I will see Cobie again... :o) It is through death that we find a deeper appreciation of life... something we shouldn't take for granted, but rather something to be grateful for each day. Love your friends and family every day, hold them close to your heart, and surround each other w/ your's and God's love through his Spirit in each of us.

May the Lord Bless you and protect you Cobie Bean!
May he make his face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
May he show you his favor and give you his peace...

Gosh Cob. What can I say...growing up with you was always an adventure. We had our days when we were "roller skating waitresses" in the basement, and ice skating at the pond, afternoon skates at Roller R Way, camping trips where we'd drive Dad nuts when we'd try to meet boys, "Nana candy" at the river, sooooo many river memories - as kids and adults, playing "pie shop" while we'd watch Saturday Night Live, the night hikes we'd take on Raven Road at Hemlock with Dad and Spike scaring us all, the bear, the fishing, boat rides, camp fires, my first college party was with you at Ship, sledding at Cougar Field, playing levitation...the list could go on forever. You made life fun! I'm so happy that Josh could share so many memories with you at the river and I'm so sad that Olivia will not have the privilege to know her Aunt Cobie. I'm so very thankful for every memory we made together. I cherish them all and I love and miss you so much.

To Cobie's family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of your beautiful Cobie. I lived with her in Seavers during our sophomore year in college. She was such a fun, vibrant and caring person who showed such strength and perseverance when we endured the death of one of her closest friends, our roommate Cathy. While we lost touch after college, her obituary did a beautiful job describing her vibrancy, positive nature and ongoing love for others. Seven years ago, I lost my little boy in an auto accident. My heart breaks for you as your grieve the loss of your precious child. May her spirit continue to shine through you and remain with you forever.

I met Cobie through my sister, Ellen. She has been such a great friend to my sister through the years, and our friendship grew from that. Cobie's zest for life and her ability to accept and be friends with so many different types of people was such a gift to us all. I have another angel now. My sincerest condolences to everyone who loved Cobie!

Joan, Bean, and Beano:
Amy and I were very sad to learn of Cobie's passing. She truly was a free spirit, always accepting of all people, and ready for fun. The river won't be the same without her. The smile on her face the day I took her for a spin in the Chris-Craft was as wide as the river, and I will never forget it. As a novice boater I appreciated her advice (and good natured teasing) on how to pull a boat up to a dock. These are tough times for your family, but please take comfort in knowing that Cobie made a positive impact in many people's lives. I know that the closeness and warmth of your family and friends will be a source of strength for you in the days ahead.

Mike, Joan, and the entire Bean family we share in your loss of Cobie who as so aptly written always seemed to brighten you up with her love of life. She was a dear friend of our sons Trampas and Seth and was there at a time when we needed her and in such a caring and loving way helped our whole family as she "nursed back to health" our son Trampas. She was a giving and caring young woman and we will treasure the ways in which she was a part of our lives. May God's peace be real to you as you mourn this tremendous loss. Our prayers will continue to be with you. In the peace of Christ that passes all our understanding, Steve and Brenda Ferree
