My condolences to the Short family.

June's mother Mildred and my grandmother (Sue Kepley Barksdale) were sisters. Since my grandmother didn't drive, we would take her to visit her sister when the family lived on Short street. According to my mother (Zola Barksdale Bergschneider), she and June's sister besides being first cousins, were the same age and close friends growing up.

Both mother and I appreciated the fact that cousin June made the effort to attend my brother's funeral in '06 on a bitterly cold windy day. When Mom passed in '11 he again was at the church in pouring down rain.

A gentleman that will be missed.

It is with great respect and genuine love and admiration for our dear, long time friend, June A. Short, Jr.. It was sometime in the early 1970's that Lola and I got to know Counselor June. Since then, our paths have crossed time and time again. I know that June was a well respected attorney who officed on the West end of the Square. It was a regular experience to see and greet and talk to June at Church, as well as in the Independence Community. There are many stories that I could tell, all complimentary of this fine human being. What I can say in fewer words, is that his, genuine friendliness and clever wit and warm smile, hearty laugh and precise style of discourse always impressed me. I recall my last conversation with June was sharing a chocolate chip cookie and cup of coffee in the common room at Trinity Episcopal Church. Not far from him, on that day was Joan, his lovely wife. We love June and Joan for many reasons. Heaven will be a cheerier place now. Perhaps less so here. Enjoy, June. I look forward, once again, to sharing cookies and coffee there, as on many pleasant occasions, here. Rest in Peace, our dear friend.
