Underneath this box, there is a helpful hint for people if they need help finding the right words to express their sympathies and condolences. I would suggest that the right words are most likely located in Jason's timeless, heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting songs. I doubt a more articulate chronicler currently wields a pen. During this period of public grief from those of us who knew your loved one through his music alone, or through meeting him as he traveled through our towns playing his wonderful songs, I have been thinking about the people who truly knew him and are mourning him as a son, a brother, a friend, a grandson and a husband. Your loss is far greater than those of us who lost an artist and a voice. I hope our sympathies are appreciated with that awareness. Those of us who didn't know him at all or only knew him professionally are saddened because of how phenomenally gifted he was and how much his art meant to us. It's difficult to lose him because of how much his work means to us, but I know it's nothing compared to how much he meant to you. Please know we are thinking of you during this time.

I am so, so sorry to hear about his passing! He was a rising star that was never seen or appreciated by most. He knew how to touch and pierce a person's soul!
I now can't stop listening to "I've Been Riding with the Ghost".
He'll be very missed! My sympathy to his wife and family.

To the Molinas,
My heart is saddened by the loss of Jason. He was so talented, intelligent & a genuine person, who was truly my first love. My thoughts are with you, and know he will be cherished and missed! Shannon Dickson

Jason's music saved my life, and I don't mean that lightly. "Didn't It Rain" got me through my darkest periods, and I will be forever grateful. Thanks for everything.

Back then, I used to look back and say "I've been listening to Jason Molina for years." When he came to San Francisco somewhere in the early
2000's, I burned bridges to stand on his. The only thing holding me up needed support too.

A friend of mine spotted Jason first. My legs shaked in his direction.

"You're Jason Molina, right?"

"Yeah."

"Look man, I just want to tell you how much your music means to me. Your albums are literally the only thing I've been listening to...for like five years. Actually just the other day I was thinking 'I gotta listen to something else...'"

I hated myself for falling into those words. I'd always let Jason say the things I couldn't.

I looked shamefully off to the side. His eyes fixed on me like lightning.

Our soul conduit.

With a flash, his arms crashed around me.

And he held on tight.

Ten years later, what he said next is crippling me now.

"I love you brother."

"I love you too, man."

...

I learned how to keep a lamp trimmed. But the North Star shone too bright. Reflecting only the light of him, our everlasting night.

Born out of Nick Drake's updated ruin. Jason's leaving in a much outdated style.

"No one knows you but the rain in the air. Don't you worry, they'll stand and stare."

With a glittering flash in my eye, anyone can see i'm not alright. My soul truth has gone away. Who will help me try and stay?

Ride with the ghost, but make room for two. Underneath your star, never a moon so blue.

Jason wrote the saddest music that ever made me happy. It got me through some dark days in my life. Thank you for that.
