Benjamin Freeman Garrett, 77, of Blackshear, Ga., formerly of Roanoke, passed away February 22, 2013. Born in Sandersville, Ga. on May 5, 1935, he had lived in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and had moved to Blackshear three years ago from Nahunta where he had lived for 10 years. He was a 1954 graduate of Nahunta High School and was a United States Air Force Veteran. He was a retired Corp. Logistics Transportation Manager with Benjamin Moore Paint Company. A man full of life, he enjoyed golf, NASCAR, hunting, collectables and was a huge Georgia Bulldog fan. He was also a member of the American Legion Hall Blackshear, Post 181. Ben was a real people person and enjoyed having a good time. He was well respected and admired by all. He brought so much joy to his children and grandchildren's lives and will be deeply missed.
He is predeceased by his parents, Freeman Walker and Nellie Lorene Hall Garrett; maternal grandparents, Lonnie and Leasie Brantley Hall; sister, Sylvia Smith; and son-in-law, Max Durham Jr.
Ben is survived by his former wife, Barbara Garrett; sons, Michael and Patricia Garrett, of Farmindale, N.J. and Stephen Garrett, of Southbury, Conn.; daughters, Cathy Durham of Jacksonville, Fla. and Lisa and Joe Newlin, of Middletown, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; niece, April and Michael Markland, of Nahunta, Ga.; and nephew, John Smith, of Tampa, Fla.
Ben's family would like to thank Dr. Dinsmore and the entire oncology staff at Orange Regional Medical Center for the care they provided to Ben and the compassion they showed to his family during his illness.
Funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at First Baptist Church, Blackshear, Ga. with Dr. Bill Young and Mr. Leon Wilson officiating. Memorialization will be by cremation.
Memorials may be made to the Orange Regional Med. Center Oncology Dept., 707 E. Main St., Middletown, NY 10940.
