LONGVIEW — Harry Allen, 83, of Longview, passed away March 27, 2013, at Summer Meadows.
He was born August 11, 1929, in Tyler, Texas, to Henry and Mary Allen. Harry graduated from a Tyler High School in 1947 and then attended Tyler Junior College. Harry also enlisted into the U.S. Army and honorably served our country.
Harry began his career at the Cotton Belt Railroad located in Tyler, then moved to Longview in 1956, and along with his father-in-law, John Petty, started Southwestern Equipment, which was also a GMC truck dealership. He then formed Longview Construction, a heavy equipment construction company, which was a key contractor of the infrastructure and on-going development of Longview. Projects ranged from site preparations for Eastman Kodak, Longview High School to the Wildwood subdivision and numerous other city projects.
Harry was also the organizer and director for eight years of American Bank. After retiring from construction, he began his second career as director of Sanitation and Fleet Services for the city of Longview.
Since childhood, Harry was of the Baptist faith. He joined First Christian Church in April of 1956 and later attended Mobberly Baptist Church.
Harry was devoted to his family and enjoyed traveling, golf and the Dallas Cowboys.
Harry leaves behind to cherish his memories, Elaine Petty Allen of Longview; children, Kathy Linton and her husband, Zeke, and Steve Allen and his wife, Cindy, all of Longview; grandchildren, Chelsea Allen of Dallas and John Allen and his wife, Caley, of San Antonio; Harry's twin brother, Harold Allen and his wife, Bobbie, of Tyler; nephew, Keith Kindle and his wife, Susan, of Willow Park, along with their children, Nancy, William and John; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
