MARION - Lloyd F. "John" Johnson, 91, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013, in Parkway Manor in Marion.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, in First United Methodist Church in Carterville, with Pastor Stephen Palmer officiating. Military rites will be performed by Army National Guard. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church.
Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home in Carterville is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, 204 Halfway Road, Marion, IL 62959, or First United Methodist Church, 301 N. Pine St., Carterville, IL 62918, or to the charity of your choice. Envelopes will also be available at the church.
Lloyd was born April 6, 1922, in Craig, Neb., to Walfred A. and Alma E. (Thoren) Johnson.
He married Alice Walker on Sept. 18, 1950, in Kansas City, Kan.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Johnson of Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Deborah Johnson of Carterville; daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Bruce Irvine of Springfield, Va.; grandchildren and their spouses, Daniel and Amy Johnson of Columbia, Mo., William and Kellie Johnson of Carterville, Ariane Irvine of Arlington, Va., and Adam Irvine of Springfield, Va.; great-grandchildren, Gavin Johnson and Lyla Johnson, both of Carterville, and Alexandra Johnson of Columbia, Mo.; and nieces and their husbands, Kathleen and Larry Ray of Astoria, Ore., and Jerilyn and Duane Austria of Lincoln, Neb.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard Johnson; sister, Margaret Vavrick; and niece, Susanne Carpenter.
He honorably served our country during World War II in the U.S. Coast Guard as a radio man, first class.
He attended the historic one room school house, Nolana School District 57, in Bert County, Neb.
Lloyd worked as a telephone engineer for Continental Telephone Company in Missouri, from 1952 1986.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Carterville.
Lloyd enjoyed reading, gardening and working in the yard. He also enjoyed playing with his four-legged friends, Zoey, Sebbie, Hippo, Yoda and Friday. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To many, he was known as "Papa."
He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Mizzou Tigers fan.
He wintered in Mesa, Ariz., with his wife, Alice, for many years.
Lloyd loved to walk his dog, Lucky, on their weekly trip to buy two lottery tickets, one for each of them.
