Luther Lewis "Skippy" Coles Sr. Luther Lewis" Skippy" Coles Sr. was born on July 5, 1936, and departed this life, at home, on Saturday, December 15, 2012.

Luther was preceded in death by his father, Dabney Coles; his mother, Mildred Durrette; a brother, Carl "Mike" Coles (surviving wife, Shirley Coles); and sister, Celestine "Deanie" Payne (surviving husband, William Payne).

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 50 years, Zelda Harris Coles; a younger brother, Elder William Coles Sr. and wife, Vanessa; one son, Luther L. Coles Jr. and wife, Jennifer; and daughters, Janice E. Coles and Dawn R. Coles. Luther also leaves seven grandchildren, four great- grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Luther served as a Gunner Mate in the United States Navy from 1956 until 1962, serving on the U.S.S. Myles C. Fox, out of Newport, Rhode Island. He was known as "the little man with the big hands". He was later employed by and retired from Comdial Corporation in Charlottesville, Virginia. Post retirement, Luther was employed by Kroger and several other area companies, until medical complications lead to his final retirement in 2007. There were no strangers in Luther's world. Anyone he worked with or around was family. Anyone that he met in public was a friend. Luther will be missed by the young and the old and everyone in between. A special family thanks goes out to everyone for their prayers and expressions of love, as well as the staff at the Emily Couric Cancer Center and Hospice of the Piedmont.

Cremation Society of Virginia, 386 Greenbrier Drive, Charlottesville, Virginia, is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial service will be held at Chapman Grove Baptist Church, 2064 Stony Point Road, Charlottesville, Virginia, at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 21, 2012.
