Phyllis Crummer Obituary

GALESBURG - Phyllis Crummer, 86, Galesburg, died at 10:42 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019.

Phyllis was born July 23, 1933, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, to William and Juanita (Loyd) Good. She married Rowland Grant Crummer in Galesburg on Sept. 15, 1951. After 64 years of marriage, Rowland preceded her in death Jan. 3, 2015.

She is survived by her beloved sister and friend, May Elizabeth Means of Galesburg; two daughters, Leslie (Daniel Harry) Williams of Calumet City and Rev. Kelli Jareaux of Washington, D.C.; two nieces, Cynthia (Wickie) Lyons of Virginia and Sheila Howard of Calumet City; and two nephews, Keith (Maria) Barker of California and Deacon Michael (Janice) Crummer of Galesburg. Also surviving are four grandsons, Patrick Brannon, Kaleb Jareaux, Shaka Williams and Nathaniel Johnson-Harry; six great-grandchildren, LaCandice, Jasmine, Kelsey, DaQuaya, Patrick Jr. and Keono; five great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many dear cousins - especially Louise Wilder of Galesburg.

Phyllis attended Galesburg Senior High School. She worked as a nurse's aide and a rehabilitation specialist at Research Hospital of Galesburg and Zeller Hospital of Peoria for over 40 years. Phyllis was an exceptionally brilliant woman with an inquisitive mind. She loved solving puzzles and playing games of strategy, particularly canasta, Scrabble and poker with her friends Roxy Schumann and Joan Hall. She was an extremely caring woman, often bringing her adolescent patients home for dinner or taking them to movies. Her caring spirit extended beyond the workplace and into her home where she helped raise many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. When her husband's health began to decline, Phyllis took care of Rowland full time so he could remain at home. She was also an excellent cook; she will be remembered for her chicken divan and her lemon meringue pies.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, at East Linwood Cemetery. Rev. Tyson Parks will officiate. Memorials may be made to the family. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.h-pw.com.
